Very Good.
Johann Jacob Zimmermann 1642-1693 was a 17th-century German nonconformist theologian who published a number of treatises that spread fear amongst Lutheran churches – works that questioned the validity of biblical miracles through his astronomical and millenarianistic views One of his most controversial works was 'De Miraculis' a work in which Zimmermann sought to prove that even according the Fathers of the Church that all the miracles of Christ were only allegories d'Holbach p132 These reports along with the studies of Bernard Connor explained that the Gospel miracles could be explained by naturally occurring phenomena
Zimmermann remained steadfast in his views against supernatural abilities and wonders not only in Jesus but in the apostles saints and mathematicians as well including Pythagoras Apollonius St Francis of Assisi St Dominic and St Ignatius of Loyola Because of this 'De Miraculis' and many other Zimmermann works were placed on the Index of Forbidden books In fact because of its controversial nature Zimmermann published it in Zurich under a pseudonym to separate the work from himself

This copy is in brown boards with handwritten title on paper label on spine Ex-library from a college library but the only indications are ink stamps on ffep and title page Discreet ink signatures on front pastedown and top of title page But otherwise no marks at all Binding is tight and sound with just slight splits starting at spine corners and bumped corners
Very rare with no other example of this edition for sale worldwide at present lii 447 pp. Petri Fox unknown

It seems likely that this collection of attacks on the Bohemian Brethren the Unitas Fratrum was meant to curry favor with Pope Leon X - and it apparently worked because he spent years at court beginning not long after. The attacks on the brethren echoed the attacks deployed by Malleus Maleficarum author Heinrich Kramer's esp. "Excusatio fratrum valdensium contra binas litteras doctoris Augustini" and their centrally misogynistic framing. Ziegler interestingly converted to Protestantism in 1532 and had most of his works entered into the index of prohibited books. His humanist sympathies are evidenced by the Roman typeface chosen here unusual at the time for a theological book printed in Leipzig.

Ca. 12 copies in OCLC very rare in commerce.

Colophon: Generosus Dominus Heinricus Kuna de Chunstat sua pecunia impressoriam officinam redemit. 1852682361852. Boston Med. Surg. J. 47/19. - Boston David Clapp Wednesday December 8 1852 8° pp.383-414 fine wrappers. First Edition ! "Communicated for the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal." " An industrious self-made man George Jacob Ziegler 1821-1895 was successively a hairdresser dentist physician author and editor. He is best known as the medical editor of the Periscope section of the Dental Cosmos and as a social activist who championed the welfare of soldiers women and nonsmokers. Ziegler's most unfortunate legacy was his research on dogs which he misinterpreted as demonstrating nitrous oxide's safety in resuscitation. Pointing to Ziegler's work dental anesthetist G.Q. Colton would popularize clinical use of 100% nitrous-oxide anesthetics during his 35-year professional career. Consequently hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide received asphyxial anesthetics." Abstract / George S. Bause: Dentist-physician George J. Ziegler: rogue researcher "cosmic" editor and social activist. J Hist Dent. 59/1 2011:pp.16-30. unknown
