1811529Ephrata in Pennsylvanien: Gedruckt bey J. Ruth 1811. 12mo. 165 x 105 mm. 6 12/2 x 4 inches. 395 i.e. 400 pp. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait engraved frontispiece image of Christ revealing divine truth 5 engraved plates and one woodcut image of the serpent printed in the text; the portrait and the frontispiece are added and are not usually found with this edition. The book is bound in contemporary calf red leather label which reads "Der weg zu Christo"; some light rubbing to binding; paper stock is brown with age fore edges a bit fragile in places; a very good copy. First American edition originally printed in Goerlitz Germany in 1624. This American edition of Boehme's mystical text was printed at the Ephrata Cloister by Jacob Ruth and is one of only two titles produced by this printer at the Cloister press. K.J.R. Arndt gives Ruth's dates as 1794-1878 but provides no other information about the biography of the printer and his relationship to Ephrata. This question is of interest because the engraved images in this book are all unsigned and are apparently re-engravings of plates form an earlier edition published anonymously in Leiden in 1730 which contains five plates. If Ruth re-engraved these plates it demonstrates a very sophisticated skill with the burin and familiarity with the creation of fine lines tonality and readily recognizable symbols. The engravings are not only fine work but early examples of the art form produced in the Pennsylvania German community of the period. Shaw & Shoemaker 22416. 182924163Bristol: Printed for the editor by Philip Rose 1829. Hardcover. g. 4to. xi2629pp. Gold lined three-quarter leather over marbled boards with gold lettering on spine. Rare edition of the Book of Jasher sometimes called Pseudo-Jasher to distinguish it from the Sefer ha Yashar. The title page of the book states: "The Book of Jasher: with Testimonies and Notes Critical and Historical Explanatory of the Text. To which is prefixed various readings and a preliminary dissertation proving the authenticity of the work. Translated into English from the Hebrew by Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus of Britain Abbot of Canterbury who went on a pilgrimage into the Holy Land and Persia where he discovered this volume in the city of Gazna." The book claims to be written by Jasher son of Caleb. Jasher covers biblical history from the creation down to Jasher's own day and was represented as being the Lost Book of Jasher mentioned in the Bible. The supposed translation was declared an obvious hoax by the Monthly Review and in 1756 the printer Jacob Ilive was sentenced to three years in jail. A photographic reproduction of this edition was published in 1924 by the Rosicrucian Order in San José California who declared it was an inspired work. Marbled endpapers. Age wear and scuffing on binding. Head of spine chipped. Few finger smudges on some leaves. Tight copy with binding in good interior in overall very good condition. 186643052Washington D.C.: n.p. 1866. First edition. A very good copy with inch marginal closed tear light soiling faint marginal stain. Broadside. 6 x 9 1/2 inches. Michigan senator Jacob Merritt Howard 1805-1871 who had worked closely with Lincoln in drafting and passing the Thirteenth Amendment was a strong supporter of his measures including "emergency actions during the secession crisis and advocated 'severe exemplary and speedy punishment of the rebels. He was especially vocal on all matters pertaining to the confiscation of rebel property and the emancipation of slaves. He was also one of the most forceful advocates of the 1863 Conscription Act" ANBO. His ire extended to trying for treason the Confederate leaders. In December he wanted to know why Davis had not been put on trial and now despite it being well-known that Davis did not have complicity in Lincoln's murder he declared in this resolution that Davis be "charged with the crimes of having incited the assassination of Abraham Lincoln President of the United States and with the murder of soldiers of the Unites States held a prisoners of war during the rebellion and other cruel and barbarous practices in violation of the rules and usages of civilized war." Clement C. Clay was also to be tried. It appears that Merritt's resolution never made it to the floor for a second reading as was required by law. Scarce.
