The first edition of this work issued in 1850 contained several samples of genuine California gold ore and is notably scarce. This revised edition was issued without the samples but contains new material on the California gold situation and California coins; Mormon coins; and other West Coast imprints. There are 5 handsome engraved plates at the end of the book showing gold coins from California and the west coast; Mormon coins; gold ingots; mining company issues; coins from Central America; and much more. The second half of the book written by Du Bois is devoted to ancient coins in the U.S. Mint's private collection including coins from the Roman Empire Persia the Byzantine era and more. The text includes much data regarding the recent strikes in California and devotes an entire chapter to the analysis of the quality of ore coming from California. The sample is included so that the novice can discriminate between alloyed and unalloyed gold. There is also a discussion of the coinage of various countries of the world including the TONG TSIEN of China a "trashy coin.extremely convenient for alms-giving a single piece being the usual quietus for a beggar." The folding plates depict a section and of a bulk head wall King St. section. Â The last plate is an isometrical sketch of concrete blocks showing binding frames. The following section is again financials showing what tasks were accomplished and then a report of the Treasurer. WorldCat 1 copy only with the Pleyel imprint at the Eastman School of Music. Other copies apparently otherwise identical carry the imprints "l'Auteur" or "aux adresses ordinaires." It would appear that the Pleyel imprint is later. The present copy is dated according to publisher's address see Devriès-Lesure I p. 128; the plate number would suggest 1801 but this date most probably refers to Pleyel's first issue.<br/><br/>Jacob-Joseph-Balthasar Martinn Martin born in Antwerp was a violinist and composer active in Paris. 1850587New Hampshire 1850. 75 x 160 mm. 3 x 6 ¼ inches. Pencil sketch on blue paper.  Includes small envelope 3 x 4 ½ inches with notation. Previous folds. Light browning at folds. Small pencil sketch of a girl in a bonnet and a man who appears to be an itinerant with patched clothes and a liquor bottle in his hand. A note on the envelope accompanying the sketch and entitled in faint pencil "N.H. Portrait Painter" is signed by E.S. Eaton who writes:  "Enclosed is a drawing made by Mr. J. Bailey Moore upon a stray slip of paper as he sat making a call at our home. I a little girl was greatly pleased and have kept and been pleased with it ever since. I remember that my dear Mother was amused at the two funny figures. E.S. Eaton". Jacob Bailey Moore was born in Candia New Hampshire in 1815 and died there in 1893. For a brief time he worked in Boston before returning to New Hampshire. During his career he spent brief stints as a journalist and as a phrenologist as well as an itinerant artist. Moore is closely identified as a member of the "Prior-Hamblen" group of early 19th portrait artists. This group's work closely follows that of William Matthew Prior 1806 -73 and Sturtevant J. Hamblen 1837-56. Their portraits have been characterized as "very flat posterlike" and were painted in oils or gouache on a variety of backings including cardboard academy board or canvas. Numerous works signed by Prior have been identified as have a few signed by Hamblen. Signed works by other members of the "Prior-Hamblen" group are quite rare. Those known to have been painted by Jacob Bailey Moore feature a flat style almost identical to that of Prior. The writer may be Ellen S. Eaton who lived in Candia on a farm with her parents Henry M. and Eliza Parker Eaton. She was born in 1846 became a school teacher and appears to have never married. Ellen's father Henry M. Eaton was selectman a number of years town clerk a representative to the state legislature two years and also town agent. He was also Captain of Candia Light Infantry. He was married a second time to Hannah G. "The formation of this Association was the beginning of the great movement for the extension of suffrage and formation of a Constitution in Rhode Island. It was drawn up by Jacob Friese" Sabin quoting Bartlett. At the time more than half of the adult males were denied the vote. The suffragists intended to test whether in fact the U.S. Constitution guaranteed to every State a republican form of government. The Association in fact determined to by-pass the General Assembly and to draft and ratify a written constitution for the state. See Patrick Conley's study of the Dorr Rebellion contained in Democracy in Decline 1977. Thomas Dorr himself remained aloof from the Association until May 1841.
