1838656841838. Notiz. Geb. Nat. Heilk. 2 99. - Weimar Landes-Industrie-Comptoir Januar Februar 1838 4° Sp.161-176 feine Broschur. Erstdruck! "After [Robert Brown], Schleiden, in his 'Contributions to Photogenesis', taking the embryonic cell as his starting-point proceeded to attempt a reconstruction of the develepment of the cell. He went seriously astray in this but he insisted on the independance of the cell and presented for the first time the notion that a plant, for exemple, is a community of cells" (PMM). "Schleiden demonstrated that plant tissues are made up of and developed from groups of cells, of which he recognized the 'cycloblast' or cell-nucleus" (DSB). First edition of the "First description of acute anterior poliomyelitis which Jakob von Heine 1799-1879 separated from other forms of paralysis; he described the deformities arising from the disease. He also called attention to congenital spastic paraplegia which following Little's classical description was termed "Little's disease". "In 1876 he demonstrated the "Lueroth theorem" whereby each uni-rational curve in rational-Castelnuovo in 1895 proved the analogous but more difficul theorem for surfaces" DSB.Lüroth's problem concerns subextensions L of KX the rational functions in the single indeterminate X. Any such field is either equal to K or is also rational i.e. L = KF for some rational function F. In geometrical terms this states that a non-constant rational map from the projective line to a curve C can only occur when C also has genus 0. That fact can be read off geometrically from the Riemann-Hurwitz formula."In addition Lueroth worked in other areas of mathematics far removed from algebraic geometry. He obtained partial proof of the topological in variance of dimension proved in 1911 by L. Brouwer and following the work of Staudt did research in complex geometry. He was also involved in the logical researches of his friend Schroder and published two books in applied mathematics and mechanics. These were Grundriss der Meclumik in which he used the vector calculus for the first time and Vorlesungen Uber immerisches Rechnen. Lueroth collaborated in editing the collected works of Hesse and Grassmann." DSB </em> hardcover

1812K7BC7632IMESKiel 1812. 4to. Königlichen Schulbuchdruckerei printed by C.L. Wäser Contemporary half calf gold-tooled spine black spine label. With 6 engraved folding plates 3 partly handcoloured. xii 335 1 pp. Rare first edition of a botanical classic the principal work of Johann Moldenhawer published in 1812. This copy was part of the collection of the famous German botanist and explorer of Brazil Philipp von Martius 1794-1868 as the book-plate on the front pastedown shows. The Beyträge reflects the knowledge acquired in the field of plant anatomy during the period 1800-1812 when many new texts on the structure of plant organs were published and Moldenhawer made advances in his own research. This book contains important findings concerning plant anatomy based on Moldenhawer's own experiments where he isolated the cells and the vessels. By completely isolating the cells and vessels in his preparations Moldenhawer demonstrated that the cell wall is closed on all sides. Moldenhawers Beiträge zur Anatomie der Pflanzen the result of eighteen years of unremitting research on plant anatomy reflects his critical insights and methodical observations both in his own experiments and in his analysis of earlier and contemporary research on plant anatomy by others. This makes it a classic overview of the history of plant anatomy. With the bookplate of the explorer Philipp von Martius on the front paste-down. Some folds in the engraved plates not affecting the images binding slightly rubbed and discoloured head of the spine and foot of the black spine label chipped but still in good condition.l BMC NH III p. 1333; Bradley I p. 98; Pritzel 6357; for the author: DSB IX p. 455. unknown
