1811529Ephrata in Pennsylvanien: Gedruckt bey J. Ruth 1811. 12mo. 165 x 105 mm. 6 12/2 x 4 inches. 395 i.e. 400 pp. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait engraved frontispiece image of Christ revealing divine truth 5 engraved plates and one woodcut image of the serpent printed in the text; the portrait and the frontispiece are added and are not usually found with this edition. The book is bound in contemporary calf red leather label which reads "Der weg zu Christo"; some light rubbing to binding; paper stock is brown with age fore edges a bit fragile in places; a very good copy. First American edition originally printed in Goerlitz Germany in 1624. This American edition of Boehme's mystical text was printed at the Ephrata Cloister by Jacob Ruth and is one of only two titles produced by this printer at the Cloister press. K.J.R. Arndt gives Ruth's dates as 1794-1878 but provides no other information about the biography of the printer and his relationship to Ephrata. This question is of interest because the engraved images in this book are all unsigned and are apparently re-engravings of plates form an earlier edition published anonymously in Leiden in 1730 which contains five plates. If Ruth re-engraved these plates it demonstrates a very sophisticated skill with the burin and familiarity with the creation of fine lines tonality and readily recognizable symbols. The engravings are not only fine work but early examples of the art form produced in the Pennsylvania German community of the period. Shaw & Shoemaker 22416. Jacob addressed this handbook to the "Freemen of London" even "the most common Readers" viii. This distinction is significant. Jacob though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. This is also evident in his other publications such as the Treatise of Laws 1721 The Common Law Common-Placed 1726 and Every Man His Own Lawyer 1736. 6353Two fine folding engraved plates. 9 leaves; 20 pp. one leaf of "Nota." Two parts in one vol. Small 4to modern wrappers. Stuttgart: J.G. Zubrodt 1681 the date is given in an anagram. First edition of this scarce observation of the famous comet of 1680-81; according to WorldCat we find no copy in North America. Apart from its brightness this comet is notable as the first to be observed using a telescope by Gottfried Kirch in Coburg. Other well-known observers included Robert Hooke Flamsteed Newton and John Evelyn. Zimmermann 1642-93 mathematician astronomer millenarian and theologian studied theology at the University of Tübingen and became a Lutheran minister at Bietigheim in Baden. A follower of Jakob Böhme Zimmermann's millenarian views caused him to be removed from his ministry. He attracted like-minded dissenters and in 1693 a group of about 40 people led by Zimmermann left Hamburg for Pennsylvania. Zimmermann died en route in Rotterdam. The remainder of the group established a religious community near the Wissahickon Creek. Zimmermann in his varied life was a professor of mathematics at Heidelberg. He wrote several notable and influential books on comets and was an active observer of the 1680-81 comet noted by Kronk see below on p. 372. Newton mentioned Zimmerman in the first edition of the Principia as an observer of this comet. The first plate depicts the comet's path. The early chapters deal with the comet's movements through the heavens and this is followed by a series of careful computations as to its exact positions at different moments in its progress. Fine copy and scarce. ❧ Kronk Cometography I pp. 369-73. Poggendorff II col. 1411. unknown books

1998164848Cambridge MA: MIT Press 1998. Hardcover. VG- light corner bumping. Color-illustrated boards with navy and white lettering. 172 pp. Color and BW illustrations. This book addresses one of the most troubling questions of contemporary art theory and practice: Who is contemporary art for Although the divide between contemporary art and the public has long been acknowledged this is the first time that artists critics and the public have come together to debate the problem and to make artmaking criticism and public reaction part of the same process. Like the exhibitions discussions and seminars held at "The Castle" during the summer 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta this book is based on the premise that contemporary artists and the general public have something to say to each other. By positing the space of "conversation" as one in which artworks can be experienced as creative sites open to multilayered interpretations by changing audiences the book provides an antidote to the modernist connoisseurial silence that has long been used to define quality. -Amazon.
