17329N.p. Printed portrait on thin coated paper 19cm x 12cm. Tipped in to folding card portrait case. Inscribed beneath image: "Study Art 1 Sec 8 Clause 5 of the Constitution of the U.S. and help to abolish interest / Yours truly / Jacob S. Coxey Sr." undated but likely dating from the period of Coxey's unsuccessful 1932 Presidential run as the candidate of the Farmer-Labor Party. Jacob S. Coxey Sr. 1854-1951; aka "General" Coxey was among the most colorful agitators of the early labor movement. He gained the sobriquet "General" when in 1894 he led a group of 400 unemployed laborers popularly known as "Coxey's Army" from Massillon Ohio to Washington DC. to demand unemployment benefits for all laid-off workers. The march did little to alter public policy but gained Coxey nationwide celebrity propelling him into a long series of highly public but unsuccessful political candidacies over the next 50 years though he did succeed in getting elected to the post of Mayor of Massillon Ohio in 1931. unknown books

184055347Providence: printed by B.T. Albro 1840. First edition 12mo pp. 11 1; bottom half of text dampstained throughout stitching broken; good. "The formation of this Association was the beginning of the great movement for the extension of suffrage and formation of a Constitution in Rhode Island. It was drawn up by Jacob Friese" Sabin quoting Bartlett. At the time more than half of the adult males were denied the vote. The suffragists intended to test whether in fact the U.S. Constitution guaranteed to every State a republican form of government. The Association in fact determined to by-pass the General Assembly and to draft and ratify a written constitution for the state. See Patrick Conley's study of the Dorr Rebellion contained in Democracy in Decline 1977. Thomas Dorr himself remained aloof from the Association until May 1841. Matted framed and glazed 15 7/8 x 13 5/8 inches; 404 x 346 mm.

This wonderfully executed pen and ink drawing depicts the moment when Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf dressed up as her Grandmother. The wolf is in her Grandmother's bed and tells Little Red Riding Hood to "Put the cake and the little pot of butter upon the bread-bin and come and lie down with me". Of course the rest is history !!

The wolf is dressed in a mop cap wearing glasses and hiding behind the curtains of the bed. Grandmother's slippers are sitting neatly on the floor by the bed and next to the bed there is a candle and a bowl on a small table. Little Riding Hood is dressed in her riding hood holding some flowers she has picked for her Grandmother and carrying a large basket with the pot of butter sticking out of it.

As always Rackham has created a moment in time - one which is universally recognized.

"Little Red Riding Hood" is a European fairy tale about a young girl and a Big Bad Wolf. Its origins can be traced back to the 10th century to several European folk tales including one from Italy called The False Grandmother Italian: La finta nonna later written among others by Italo Calvino in the Italian Folk Tales collection. The best known versions were written by Charles Perrault and then later by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Arthur Rackham chose the original Charles Perrault version.

The Moral of the Story. Children especially attractive well bred young ladies should never talk to strangers for if they should do so they may well provide dinner for a wolf. [Sussex]: , 1933 unknown books
