John Murray Albemarle Street. 8vo.</p><p>293 85 i. e. 58 41 pages. 1 unnumbered page.</p><p>Contemporary half calf.</p><p>Author was a one time MP and a London merchant who spent many years as comptroller of corn returns for the Board of Trade. He was commissioned to write a report on the Corn Trade and Corn Laws and was an advocate for the repeal of the Corn Laws.</p><p>In addition to the report on the Trade in Corn in some of the States of Northern Europe this book includes sections on the Commerce of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azoff and also Observations on the Benefits arising from the Cultivation of Poor Soils. <br /><br /></p><p>Book is in very good condition with raised bands on spine and morocco label. Spine and corners in leather. Leaves are remarkably clean and no significant age toning. Edges sprinkled. No inscriptions or markings except for previous sale price in pencil on first blank and on rear pastedown. No foxing or spotting.</p><p>Armorial bookplate on front pastedown.</p><p><br />Imperfections: slight tear approx 1cm at joint at head of spine. First Edition of this important work by one of the leading contemporary authorities on the corn trade and corn laws. Jacob a London merchant was appointed in 1822 to the comptrollership of corn returns a post which he retained for the next twenty years. In 1825 and 1827 he was commissioned by the Government to report on the condition of agriculture and the trade in corn in some of the states of northern Europe. The present collection of tracts includes his second detailed statistical report in addition to two other papers Notices respecting the commerce of the Black Sea and of the Sea of Azoff; more especially as regards the trade in wheat and Observations on the benefits arising from the cultivation of poor soils by the application of pauper labour; as exemplified in the colonies for the indigent and for orphans in Holland. Supralibros on all covers of The Society of Writers to the Signet. Facciolati 1682-1769 and Forcellini 1688-1768 were both philologists and lexicographers at Padua the latter being the student and later the collaborator of the former. Their editorial work on the 1719 Calepino convinced them of the need for a totally new work. Forcellini spent 40 years reading all of the classical Latin writers. He also studied inscriptions coins and medals. The resulting vocabulary is enormous and proved to be the basis for all subsequent works of the kind. With a lithographed portrait of the artist mounted 8 lithographed plates of stage designs and 9 poems in red decorated letterpress frames the lithographs by Desguerrois & Co. With the 8 plates of stage designs hand-coloured as published. First and only edition of a memorial to the costume and stage designer François Joseph Pfeiffer Jr. 1778-1835 with a biographical sketch by Gerrit van Enst Koning 1794-1853 lithographic portrait lists of his work and coloured lithographs of his stage designs with a poem facing the portrait and each of the stage designs all written for the present book by the famous Dutch author and poet Jacob van Lennep 1802-1868. Pfeiffer was best known for his Romantic stage designs for the Amsterdam Schouwburg city theatre. From 1820 to 1835 he created complete decors for many different plays but none has survived. The lithographs in the present book therefore form an essential primary source for the history of Dutch theatre. Also included is a list of the most important decorations Pfeiffer made for various theatres. A good copy with a few plates lightly browned the leaf on which the portrait is mounted foxed and a few occasional minor stains. Binding slightly faded.
