A very comprehensive survey and discourse on the history of signboards "from the earliest times to the present day" i.e. the mid-nineteenth century. Cloth-covered boards with gilt illustration on the front cover and gilt lettering and illustration on the spine. In very good condition given that this book is nearly 140 years old: tight straight and minor wear only. Contents mainly dealing with public house pub signs. An interesting early pro-abolitionist opinion from rural Pennsylvania. Includes James Monroe's 1819 message to Congress on the State of the Union.
