Illustrated with a frontispiece and over one hundred in-text engravings. A collection of emblems or allegorical illustrations with accompanying explanatory text morals and poems. Displayed in sets of three elements: an icon or image a motto and text explaining the connection between the image and motto. This category of book was popular in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Written by Jacob Cats a Dutch poet humorist jurist and politician famous for his emblem books and Robert Farlie a British author and poet. Translated and edited with additions by Richard Pigot a Dutch translator and member of the Leyden Society of Netherlands Literature. Illustrated by John Leighton an English artist notable for his book illustrations and book cover designs. Bound in full tooled morocco. Externally sound with rubbing to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Light fading to the spine with minor loss to the head of the spine. Front hinge starting but firm with the rear hinge failed resulting in the text block detaching from the spine to the rear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot or handling mark predominantly to the endpapers. Good Longmans, Green, and Co. hardcover

1844186843London: James Nisbet and Co. 1844. The novelty of his teachings apparently attracted considerable interest First edition arguing that the main benefit of British military expansion in Asia lay in the new opportunities for religious conversion rather than increased freedom of trade. A member of the London Missionary Society Tomlin 1793-1880 accompanied the German Karl Gützlaff during most of his pioneering journey through Thailand in 1828 - the first visit to the country by Protestant missionaries. In Thailand Tomlin "distributed religious tracts and preached but was unable to build a church. In a period of religious freedom the novelty of his teachings apparently attracted considerable interest. After visiting Bali he returned to Bangkok although as little more than a visitor. By 1833 Tomlin was principal at the Anglo-Chinese College in Malacca when he abolished the stipend the mission paid to students. His relationship with the London Missionary Society came to an end in 1834 after which he ran his own school in Malacca" Howgego. Tomlin's prefatory remarks appeal for greater missionary work in China following the First Opium War. "That vast empire which has been closed against us and the pure Gospel for many ages is at last thrown open" p. xiv. The subscriber's list at the rear lists only 177 copies distribution focused on the Liverpool area. Octavo. Folding frontispiece map. Original brown horizontal-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt and stamped in blind covers blocked in blind yellow coated endpapers edges untrimmed binder's ticket of Westleys & Clarke. Front free endpaper with near-contemporary ink annotation referencing pp. 315 & 361 marginalia on those pages; recent pencillings on endpapers. Cloth perhaps lightly cleaned a few marks to boards head of front joint just starting contents clean: a very good attractive copy. Vol. 1: "Seder Zeraim" 196 pp. Vol. 2: "Seder Moed" 232 pp. Vol. 3: "Seder Nashim" 212 pp. Vol. 4: "Seder Nezikin" 268 pp. Vol. 5: "Seder Kodshim" 264 pp. Vol. 6: "Seder Tehorot" 212 pp. Book has the original Hebrew of the Mishnah and the translation into Judeo-German in double columns atop the commentary "Melo Kaf Nahat" which is in Hebrew Rashi Script. The author of the commentary was a renowned talmudic scholar and author who lived in the first half of the eighteenth century. This groundbreaking commentary was considered a “funnel of sorts†for previous rabbinic and Medieval commentaries on the Mishnah for it collected explanations from Rashi Maimonides Bertinoro and Tosafot Yom-Tov. It also drew heavily upon Isaac ibn Gabbai's commentary. This work was originally in Amsterdam in the year of 1732. This is the later reprint from Berlin printed between the years 1832-1834. Third edition of detailed histories of 38 castles and palaces in the Netherlands with lithographed views of each castle some plans the coats-of-arms of most of the owners and a few interior views. Most of the lithographed views are printed in black and two colours a few with separate blocks and many are full-fledged chromolithographs with complicated patterns of subtly shaded colours. Lennep 1802-1868 became a leading Dutch literary figure especially known for his historical novels his Vondel edition and his histories. With owner's stamp of C. Caspers on endleaf. Some occasional spots and browning and a couple leaves loosely inserted a good copy.
