290 pages. Reproductions of black and white photos in text. "Whether by accident or design, governments and agencies have remained silent, so all the research has been up to us. However this true fifty year old shame must be revealed in the hope that mankind remembers and never allows it to be repeated." - from Foreword. "Our story tells what happened to 168 Allied Airmen who jumped into Northern Europe after their planes had met with an explosive and fiery end... Because our eventual betrayal to the Gestapo was accomplished so smoothly, a number of these encounters will be explained so that you can better understand our dilemma. The retelling of our encounter with our Gestapo hosts is mild, for many of us do not wish to recall the most unpleasant details that deserve to stay well hidden in the back of our minds... Now with this story told, we again wish to forget." - from Prologue. Moderate wear. Unmarked. Binding intact. A sound copy. Book

A beautiful edition of Dante's Inferno (Italian text). Illustrated with 55 extremely disturbing original etchings, almost all full-page and hors-texte, by Hungarian-Jewish artist Laszlo Barta. Edition limited to 275 numbered copies of which this is one of 200 printed on fine Rives wove paper. Folio. Loose as issued in original wraps, with board chemise and slipcase. A tiny bit of faint foxing, else FINE AND BRIGHT. A rare and fascinating illustrated edition of the Inferno, likely made even rarer by the fact that both the illustrator and the publisher were Jewish, and it was issued in France on the eve of the Second World War.
Two volumes, complete. An exhaustive history of the Gherardesca family, written in order to establish that family's nobility and rights. With the rare second volume, an extensive compendium of documentation with four engraved plates. The most famous member of the family in question, of course, was Ugolino della Gherardesca, a traitor immortalized by Dante in Inferno XXXII-III, where he eternally chews on the head of Archbishop Ruggieri, who had imprisoned him in a tower without food until he ate the bodies of his children. xv, 615; 1, 317, 18 + four engraved plates (one folding). Printed on fine laid paper. Elaborate engraved title-page in first volume. Large 4to. Attractively bound in vellum-backed decorated boards. Light wear to bindings and a little soiling to spines, but structurally perfect. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. RARE.

A portfolio of 51 haunting original etchings by Hanif Lehmann printed on extremely fine, thick wove paper, with 12 pages of relevant text excerpts from Dante's Inferno in German, as translated by Stefan George. ONE OF ONLY FIVE COPIES OF THE LARGE FOLIO EDITION WITH ALL OF THE ETCHINGS SIGNED, JUSTIFIED, AND TITLED BY THE ARTIST (in the regular edition, limited to 25 copies, there are only 48 etchings, and they are not signed). Each of these five copies was printed for a specific collector, named in the printed justification: this copy was printed for a well-known Italian opera singer. The justification is also signed by the artist.
