Lazare Weiller est une célébrité alsacienne. Il est né à Sélestat en 1858 dans une modeste famille juive, d’un père colporteur et d’une mère servante. Après l’annexion de l’Alsace-Moselle en 1871, il rejoint son oncle, Moïse Weiller, un industriel fixé en Charente. Après de brillantes études à Angoulême, au lycée St. Louis à Paris puis à Oxford, il retourne dans l’usine de tamis métalliques de son oncle. Il se convertit au catholicisme en 1882, épouse sa cousine qui meurt en couches et se remarie avec la fille d’un député de l’Yonne. Il fit fortune avec des usines de tréfilerie en produisant des câbles téléphoniques et des câbles sous-marins. Il fut aussi un pionnier de la télévision. En 1908 il crée la Cie Générale de Navigation aérienne en en 1912 la Cie Universelle de télégraphie et téléphonie sans fil. Waldeck-Rousseau lui confia une mission aux États-Unis où il rencontra Pierpont Morgan et Vanderbilt. En 1914 le gouvernement l’envoie en Suisse où les Allemands avaient établi leur QG de propagande. De mai 1915 à sept. 1918, il publie dans Le Temps une série de lettres sous le titre L’Allemagne vue de Suisse. Ces lettres forment la 1ere partie du volume (pp. 1 à 96). The Tirukkural literally Sacred Verses or shortly the Kural is a classic Tamil language text considered one of the greatest works on ethics and morality it is known for its universality and secular nature. Its authorship is traditionally attributed to Valluvar also known in full as Thiruvalluvar born 30 BC and was a weaver by profession. The Kural is traditionally praised with epithets and alternate titles such as �the Tamil Veda� and �the divine book.� It emphasizes non-violence and moral vegetarianism as virtues for an individual. The book contains 133 chapters and each chapter deals with a different theme with advice. The chapters have 10 aphorisms each and they among others offer advice on self-control on the fear of sin securing the friendship of great men against idleness on false friendship on abstaining from drink on modesty etc. The book is the product of the extensive study of Tamil language. The subject matter of the book is illuminating and delicate which makes this discourse an indispensable one and immensely good for common readers. About the Authors:-William Henry Drew was a 19th-century Christian missionary to India who rendered the Tirukkural into English. However he translated only the first 630 couplets of the Tirukkural. He rendered the Tirukkural into English in prose form and first published it in 1840. Of the 133 chapters of the Kural text he translated only the first 63 chapters. The first edition also included the original Tamil text Parimelazhagar's commentary Ramanuja Kavirayar's amplification of the commentary in addition to Drew's English prose renderings. Drew's rendering closely followed the commentary of Parimelalakar and thus almost remained close to the original work of Valluvar. The Title 'Thirukkural written/authored/edited by W. H.
