Emma Lazarus dedicated Admetus and Other Poems, her second book of poems, which appeared in the twenty-second year of her life, To my friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson, who had encouraged her poetic career. The volume contains perhaps her earliest poem on a Jewish subject, In the Jewish Synagogue at Newport, written in July 1867, when she was not yet eighteen. (From the Ends of the Earth: Judaic Treasures of the Library of Congress, 1991) . Author's second book, only 500 copies were printed. Her rare second book. Lazarus is most famous for her poem, "The New Colossus," the final five lines of which are inscribed at the foot of the Statue of Liberty.
