From Wikipedia: Julius Lazarus 1919-2008 Was Born And Raised In Europe And Educated In Vienna Austria. After Serving An Apprenticeship With A Blacksmith He Acquired Skills As A Machinist And Toolmaker. In 1939 Lazarus Emigrated From Austria To The United States To Escape Nazi Oppression. Settling In New York City He Obtained Work As A Machinist And Joined The United Electrical Workers Union Ue A Union That Was Active In Progressive Political And Social Causes Including The Early Civil Rights Movement In America. The Ue's Left-Wing Orientation And Strong Stand Against International Fascism Dovetailed And Reinforced Lazarus's Own Socialist Perspective. Lazarus Joined The United States Army In 1942 But Was Honorably Discharged Following A Knee Injury That Rendered Him Unfit For Combat Duty. Returning To Civilian Life He Attended Classes At The New York Institute Of Photography And Embarked Upon A New Career As A Photographer And Photojournalist. Upon Graduation He Traveled Extensively As A Freelance Photographer Throughout The United States Europe And Communist Bloc Countries During The Post-War Period Documenting In Photographic Images Influential Political Figures Intellectuals And Social Activists. Among His More Prominent Subjects Were: Paul Robeson W.E.B. Dubois Henry A. Wallace And Vito Marcantonio The American Labor Party Congressman From New York. During The 1948 Presidential Election Campaign Lazarus Attended Progressive Party Events And Rallies And Photographed Presidential Candidate Henry A. Wallace. Lazarus Accompanied And Photographed Noted Singer Actor And Political Activist Paul Robeson At Many Of These Political Rallies. Lazarus Contributed Photographic Images To Union Publications Domestic Left-Wing Newspapers And Journals And A Variety Of Foreign Magazines Covering Youth Cultural And Sporting Festivals In Communist Bloc Countries During The Late 1940S And Early 1950S. Through His Documentary Photography Lazarus Exposed Urban Squalor Poverty And Unfair Housing Discrimination Against Black Families In New York City. During This Same Period He Also Photographed Political Demonstrations In New York City Denouncing The Cold War Policies Of The United States And Organized Rallies Supporting American Communist Party Leaders And Members Under Indictment For Violation Of The Smith Act.
