1810413795Haverhill Massachusetts 1810. Softcover. Near Fine. Partially printed letterpress documents. 154 documents p. 5 28-177 all but the first five documents are hand-numbered by Wingate. Each document is filled out in the hand of Moses Wingate in his capacity as Justice of the Peace of Haverhill. Formerly bound with sewing and glue marks along the spine otherwise the documents themselves are mostly near fine or better with a few of them exhibiting small chips or tears. Each document contains the names of the adversaries and usually the decision by default which is filled out and Signed by Moses Wingate. A few have extensive notes on the verso but most are straightforward defaults. We suspect most of the plaintiffs were businessmen or shopkeepers and most of the defendants were defaulters on small accounts.<br /> <br /> Wingate born in 1769 was a distinguished resident of Haverhill in Essex County near the New Hampshire border who lived to more than 100 dying in 1870 and who cast a vote in every presidential election from Washington to Grant. He was at various times a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives and Senate and Justice of the Peace of Haverhill for nearly half a century.<br /> <br /> Among the plaintiffs here represented is publisher and printer Daniel Appleton founder of the important publisher D. Appleton and Company; as well as members of the locally prominent Carlton Minot Emerson Ingersoll and Whittier families John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill in 1807; at least three different Whittiers are named here presumably relatives.<br /> <br /> An interesting historical insight into business and justice in the early days of the Republic. unknown
1824863M10Merthyr Tydfil: J. James 1824. First edition. Hardback. Very Good. 7.5" by 4.5". Not Stated. The first edition of this very scarce collection of poetry by the Welsh poet William Moses. The first edition of this very scarce work rebound in boards with a paper spine label. Ink inscriptions to the first blank page. William Moses 1742-1824 received only seven months worth of education before being impelled to work but he endeavoured to educate himself so that he could write poetry in the native language that he loved. He published his first volume of poems in 1808. This work a second collection was published just before his death in 1824 and is now a very scarce work. The title page and last two pages are facsimiles of the originals but the rest of the work is the original 1824 printing. Rebound in boards with a paper spine label. Externally in excellent condition. Internally firmly bound. The facsimile pages appear a little faint but are otherwise bright and clean. The rest of the pages are age toned and spotted throughout. A manuscript notebook full of pontification on a variety of subjects some rather mundane "Friendship is an acquisition which is very necessary and needful in life" and some on more colorful topics: the autobiography of a hat Yankee peddlers "Among the variety of imposters which we daily meet the yanks peddlers must be the first which comes under our observation"; slavery; the plight of the Indians; fashion "Where the old fashioned knee-buckles have been turned into some article of fancy; the sheepskin pantaloons and horn buttons have given place to morocco shoes and shell combs". Thirty-three entries are provided in all. One describes the town of Pembroke CT; there seems little otherwise to indicate where these essays were published if at all. unknown

Sunned bumped and worn spine has blue cloth Dewey label. Corners are lightly bumped and lightly worn. The pages are fragile and brittle. The top corners of pages 55-62 and 245 are chipped with some loss of text. Pages 67 89 91 95-100 205 and 287-290 are chipped at top corner pages 235 and 332 are chipped on page edge; the top corner of pages 114 and 175 are detached and laid in and the corner of page 175 has a small stain. Pages 15 81 103-106 115 129-143 153/158 177 181 189-191 201 and 331 have tears of varying sizes. Seven pages are mended with tape which has darkened and in some cases stained the abutting page. One of the signatures groups of bound pages for pages 245-284 has a broken top stitch. We also noted several tiny check or ticks marks in the text. After the trial Thacher left New England and served as pastor in Wysox Pennsylvania and in Courtland and Cayuga Counties in New York. The trials attracted a fair amount of attention; according to Cohen it was discussed in three pamphlets. All are scarce. He studied at Trinity College Dublin and at the Hebrew College London. He was the author of The History of the Jews in Great Britain 1851. From the collection of John Wilson c. 1826-1900 pioneer merchant and book collector of Portland Oregon.
