The spine has some shallow punctures from storage some scuffing wear to the head and foot marked by handling and storage. The spine and boards are steady and sound. Within the guttering along the Preface page is cracked but the security of the pages are unaffected. The contents have evidence of age ownership throughout. There are occasional pencilled annotations. They also have very very light age discolouration about the edges some very few handling marks. Signature of the late Leon J. Leibreich the influential Professor of Theology at Hebrew Union College who has a prize for liturgy endowed in his name on title page. Work was originally written in Arabic by Judah ben David Hayyuj. This book includes both the Hebrew translation by Moses Gikitilia of Cordova and the English translation by John W. Nutt. Minor age wear to exterior. Binding has been expertly reinforced with green binder's tape along front endpapers. Book is in very good condition. Judah ben David Hayyuj c. 945 - 1000 was a Spanish-Jewish grammarian. His thorough knowledge of Arabic grammatical literature led him to apply to the Hebrew grammar the theories elaborated by Arabic grammarians and thus to become the founder of the scientific study of that discipline. The preceding scholars had found the greatest difficulty in accounting by the laws of Hebrew morphology for the divergences existing between the regular or so-called "strong" verbs and the "weak" verbs. A hopeless confusion appeared to reign here in Hebrew; and much ingenuity was spent in endeavoring to discover the principles that controlled the conjugation of the verbs. To substantiate his theories he wrote the treatises upon which his reputation chiefly rests the Kitab al-Af'al Dhawat Huruf al-Lin The Book of Verbs Containing Weak Letters and Kitab al-Af'al Dhawat al-Mathalain The Book of Verbs Containing Double Letters which comprise this particular book. Early edition of this polemic which first appeared in Hudson NY in 1802 but is here slightly reframed to address the campaign for Massachusetts governor in the election of 1807 between the incumbent Caleb Strong and James Sullivan. 9.25 x 6 inches early 20th century marbled boards and leather gilt spine label very good 30 pp. A polemic in the style of Matthew Carey but with some interesting anti-semitic content in its historical considerations: a diatribe against Absalom "Moses reviled as a monarchist" "The ingratitude of the Hebrew Republic toward the family of Gideon" "Sudden transitions from Republicanism to Monarchy in the instances of the ancient Hebrews and modern Britons" -- some of the chapter headers. Sampson Ezra A Congregational minister was born at Middleborough Mass. Feb. 12 1749. He graduated at Yale College 1773 and became pastor of the Congregational Church at Plympton Mass. Feb. 1775. He also officiated as chaplain in the Revolutionary army and was settled at Hudson N.Y. 1796. While there he became associated with Rev. Harry Crosswell in the editorship of The Balance one of the first literary journals in the United States 1801-4. The earliest edition in OCLC is the fourth and there are only records of a few in between. A wonderful compendium of the moneyed elite in mid-19th century New York a time when successful immigrants and their children were beginning to nip at the heels of the Mayflower descendants and their like.
