1866020129New York: North Clear Creek Gold and Silver Mining Co. Very Good. 1866. Ephemera. Two items of ephemera from the North Clear Creek Gold and Silver Mining Company in Colorado. Includes a 3pp pamphlet 8" x 11" and an unused stock certificate with content on both sides measuring 6" x 10". Pamphlet has minor creasing and a small 1/8" tear along bottom edge; stock certificate is bright and crisp. Ephemera from a New York-based investment company with property in the Gregory and Central City mining districts of Colorado. The pamphlet contains a report to the stockholders of the Company and was written by Theodore Moses who was sent to examine the mining claims owned by the Company. A diagram is included of the Gregory and Foot & Simmons lodes. The ten dollar stock certificate is in unusually fine condition. 1874877Wilmington N.C. 1874. Hardcover. Very good. Manuscript on paper 58 unnumbered pages written in an octavo ruled notebook the MS occupying the first half the second being blank. Contemporary American binding sheepskin over boards light wear to binding extremities hinges cracked but firm marbled edges. An attractive manuscript in very good antiquarian condition. ¶ AN AMERICAN MANUSCRIPT CATALOGUE OF PLANTS GROWING AROUND WILMINGTON N.C. being hand-written transcript of another manuscript of Moses Curtis's "Catalogue of Plants Growing Spontaneously Around Wilmington NC." On the first leaf is the note: "Copied by Dr. E. Foreman from a Mss manuscript presented to him by Mr. S.A. Story of Wilmington NC October 1874." Dr. Foreman's additions to the work appear at the end. <br/><br/>¶ Beautifully and articulately written by hand in ink bound in a full leather booklet. Moses A. Curtis 1808-1872 was a noted American botanist. Curtis was born in Stockbridge Massachusetts and educated at Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduating he became a tutor for the children of former Governor Edward Bishop Dudley in Wilmington North Carolina returning to Massachusetts in 1833 to study theology. He married Mary de Rosset in 1834 was ordained in 1835 and obtained a post to teach at the Episcopal school at Raleigh North Carolina. He became rector of the Protestant Episcopal Church at Hillsborough North Carolina in 1841 and in charge of a parish at Society Hill South Carolina in 1847 before returning to the Protestant Episcopal Church at Hillsborough in 1857. He died in Hillsborough North Carolina in 1872. <br/><br/>¶ As a botanist Curtis explored the southern Appalachian Mountains embarking on a major expedition in 1839. He maintained a herbarium of dried specimens and contributed specimens to John Torrey and Asa Gray. He collected lichens for Edward Tuckerman and corresponded with many other botanists including Miles Joseph Berkeley to whom he sent many specimens with descriptions and notes. Gray said of him that "No living botanist . is so well acquainted with the vegetation of the southern Allegheny Mountains ." and that he ".was among the first to retrace the steps and rediscover the plants found and published by the elder Michaux in the higher Alleghany Mountains. 182442478Unpaginated. 30 b/w etchings. Etched title and 29 plates. The images are reminiscent of but more charming than those in Cooke's "Shipping and Craft." Brewington lists Moses as an English etcher who was born in 1782 in London. He worked for the British Museum and died in 1870. Moses published books of drawings of art objects and of historical scenes throughout the first half of the 19th century. However this title is among his scarcest. The present copy contains parts 1-4 in his series of waterfront views. Each image is dated so we can trace the progression from the Thames to Sheerness to the Dockyards. As time went on he issued more prints until he was able to publish an issue with 57 etchings. The edition offered here is rare with only two copies listed on OCLC. Brewington Dictionary p. 268. Scattered foxing some pages rather grubby but still a good copy of a lovely collection of images. At the time of the Civil War the Moses family were fifth- generation Sephardic Jews. They were "completely acculturated into Columbus society while remaining devout Jews" Rosen. During the war Isaac Moses manufactured rifles for the Confederacy at Columbus. The American Civil War database lists an Isaac Moses serving in Nelson's Georgia cavalry but provides no further information. Not in Hummel or Singerman. Newly rebound in cloth with a leather spine label retaining the original bookplate re-attached to the inside front cover. Ex-libris with a stamp on the title page one interior page and the final page. The title page was washed and the edges and a tear expertly and archivally repaired. Some page edges are chipping. Title continues ".three years and a half. To which is added a Biographical Sketch of Gen Miranda." A manuscript notebook full of pontification on a variety of subjects some rather mundane "Friendship is an acquisition which is very necessary and needful in life" and some on more colorful topics: the autobiography of a hat Yankee peddlers "Among the variety of imposters which we daily meet the yanks peddlers must be the first which comes under our observation"; slavery; the plight of the Indians; fashion "Where the old fashioned knee-buckles have been turned into some article of fancy; the sheepskin pantaloons and horn buttons have given place to morocco shoes and shell combs". A 3-volume set detailing sculptures created by Venetian artist Antonio Canova 1757-1822. Vols. 1 and 3 have introductions; otherwise this set proceeds with illustrations and descriptions of specific sculptures one by one. Vol. 1 contains descriptions & illustrations for 40 sculptures. Vol. 2 does the same for 32 busts monuments and bas reliefs with many depictions asdouble-page spread engravings. Vol. 3 was a supplement published four years after the first two. It contains dozens of new entries for sculptures busts and bas reliefs. It also outlines medals struck with Canova figures and it includes "Thoughts on the Arts" a compilation of 60 separate "thoughts" written by Canova or said to represent his beliefs. Very Good. <br/><br/> "Dr. Adams was acquitted of the murder of his wife who had been killed with an ax in her kitchen at Ellsworth Maine" McDade. "There was evidence that the house had been robbed and the defense indicated that the murderer was probably a thief. The defendant a physician as well as sheriff of the county did not testify in his own defense" Cohen. This second edition was also published in 1815 with "no apparent change from the first edition" Cohen. <br/> This pamphlet the only contemporary record of the Trial prints the names of the jurors noting that twenty-one veniremen had been peremptorily challenged summaries of the testimony the Charge of Judge Jackson to the Jury and the Jury's verdict -- Not Guilty-- after two hours' deliberation. Judge Jackson's charge favored Adams: he forcefully reminded the jurors that conviction required "a violent presumption of his guilt" and that the question was "not whether they were entirely satisfied of the innocence of the prisoner; but whether he was proved to be guilty." <br/>FIRST EDITION. Early annotations and signatures to title page interior otherwise clean. $650. Only edition. "Moses Thacher sometimes spelled Thatcher charged Pond with slander. Pond pleaded not guilty and alleged truth as a defense. The jury found for the plaintiff and awarded $5.00 in damages and $1.25 in costs" Cohen. After the trial Thacher left New England and served as pastor in Wysox Pennsylvania and in Courtland and Cayuga Counties in New York. The trials attracted a fair amount of attention; according to Cohen it was discussed in three pamphlets. All are scarce. 1852266899Boston 1852. unbound. Partial unsigned manuscript consisting of four pages 9.75 x 7.75 inches labeled "2" through "5" of a more extensive document all in the hand of Moses G. Farmer from 1852-1853 discussing the earliest trial-runs of the first ever Electric Fire Alarm System implemented in Boston. Though placed into service on April 28th 1852 Farmer's notes in diary form start on June 21st assessing the system while constantly citing ways to improve his new invention in very small part: ".Wednesday June 23 an alarm at 2:15.could not be easily read and caused a delay of 8 or 10 minutes.Saturday July 9th the circuit wheel of the key board needed repairs - the connector melted off by strong battery. July 10th Great Fire in Fort Hill. Alarm first came from Lower Boston plain. They tried to give it from Fort Hill & Persshar St. but both turned together turned too fast while ringing for So. Boston alarm came from Broad St. a delay in the time alarm of about 7 minutes.Friday Aug 6th Wanted! A Battery! Easy of manipulation. Constant & enduring in its operation. Powerful & certain in its effects & of small.cost! Sunday Aug 8th An alarm from D-7 at 12M. The operator did not understand it being the first one from that box & did not strike till the alarm came from I-4 at 12:15 P.M.Says he will recognize it next time. Oct 17th tried to raise an alarm from D-3 - S-3 4 & 5 but could not the lightning assertors were the cause of the difficulty.Friday Oct. 29th Put my newly invented battery on the South Boston signal circuit first time. Nov. 22nd Proceeded to try experiments on the velocity of sound for Captain C Wilkes.put my new battery on all signal circuit. Monday Dec. 20th Bad luck within two days at Three alarms. At one alarm the operator forgot to connect the South circuit. At Another the South end bells struck all sorts of ways on account of the key board running too fast. Atmospheric electricity probably had something to do with raising a false alarm at South End yesterday. Note: this is possibly the earliest recorded false alarm! Jan 11th 1853 Patent for my battery granted today. Sat. Jan. 15th 1853 Key board out of order. Made a substitute & had I repaired. Monday Jan. 17th Found wire broken at So. Williams St. did not intercept the circuit." This item has natural folds but is still in near fine condition.<br/><br/> American electrical engineer and inventor of the Electric Fire Alarm System and several forms of the Incandescent Electric Light. He also patented an early light bulb which was later bought by Thomas Edison. Though a true pioneer of many aspects of 19th century electrical invention he and his wife were Spiritualists and felt that their talents were God-given and that they shouldn't take credit for any of his inventions. 18298887Portland 1829. No Binding. Very Good. 50 ¾ x 40 ¼ inches. Steel engraving. Original wash color refreshed; expertly conserved re-mounted on new linen; a few cracks & marginal mends but fine for this kind. The very rare three copies cited in OCLC first edition of this excellent map of Maine by the state's first mapmaker. An exceptionally well-preserved example. Unlike many early American state maps that struggled to get completed Greenleaf's received a warm commendation from the state legislature even before it was published and the mapmaker was granted $1000 to aid him in finishing the map. Greenleaf later received $640 from the legislature for 40 copies of the map that were obtained for state use a remarkable $16 per copy. Perhaps the large number of copies sold for official rather than private use helps account for the map's present rarity. The map was originally intended to accompany an atlas and survey of the state that Greenleaf published the same year but very few complete sets of the three items are known to have survived. Greenleaf appears to have taken special care in the production of this map. Although published in Portland Maine Greenleaf employed as engravers for this work the estimable J. H. Young and F. Dankworth both of whom produced major works for the firms of S. A. Mitchell and others. This precisely detailed map which shows ten counties in different colors provides state county town and township boundary lines. The state's many rivers lakes ponds and even falls are shown as are roads and elevations. The map was re-published in 1844 by Greenleaf's son and namesake from the same plates but with emendations and several times thereafter. Greenleaf published two earlier maps of the state in 1815 and 1820 but the present work was by far his finest. Ristow W.
