"The Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, was an intellectual movement in Europe that lasted from approximately the 1770s to the 1880s. The Haskalah was inspired by the European Enlightenment but had a Jewish character. It encouraged Jews to study secular subjects, to learn both the European and Hebrew languages, and to enter fields such as agriculture, crafts, the arts and science. The maskilim (followers of the Haskalah) tried to assimilate into European society in dress, language, manners and loyalty to the ruling power. The Haskalah eventually influenced the creation of both the Reform and Zionist movements" - Shira Schoenberg. 236 pages including index. At 88 years of age, Merve Wilkinson no doubt ranks as the Moses of North American eco-forestry. His 136-acre homestead, Wildwood, situated on a lush Vancouver Island peninsula just south of Nanaimo B.C., has become the leading example of intelligent forestry on Canada's west coast and gained an international reputation as a prime example of sustainable logging. Merve, who was awarded both the Orders of British Columbia and of Canada for his life's work, is an activist of whom all Canadians should be proud. In 1999, when Wilkinson defended himself and fellow protesters in court after the standoff at Clayoquot Sound, the B.C. judge who heard the case, in a statement of unbridled respect, declared Merve "magnificently unrepentant." "In speaking out against current industrial clearcut logging practices, Merve has become a genuine Canadian hero. Uncompromising, tough, fearless, with a wonderful sense of humour, he is now an elder who inspires young people to refer to his home as Mervana. This is a story that should be read by all who care about the future and seek alternatives to our destructive ways." - Dr. David Suzuki. "Recently I had the privilege of spending a day with a most remarkable forester, Merve Wilkinson, and his wife, Ann. Since 1939 Merve has logged his 136-acre forest nine times: walk into it today and it is like walking into one of nature's cathedrals. The forest is beautiful, the old giant trees still standing, more animal species there than when he began - and no pesticides have been used.... You see it *can* be done." - Jane Goodall. Book

Maimonides (1135 or 1138-1204) was a Jewish rabbi, physician, and philosopher in Spain and Egypt during the Middle Ages. He was one of the various medieval Jewish philosophers who also influenced the non-Jewish world. Although his copious works on Jewish law and ethics were initially met with opposition during his lifetime, he was posthumously acknowledged to be one of the foremost rabbinical arbiters and philosophers in Jewish history. Today, his works and his views are considered a cornerstone of Orthodox Jewish thought and study - Wikipedia. JUDAICA BOX 3

An important task consists in the offering of platforms for discussions. During October 25th to 26th 1995 the Konrad Adenauer Foundation organized an event at Notre Dame, Jerusalem on the theme: "The Psychology of Peace and Conflict - The Israeli Palestinian Experience". Joint organizers of this seminar were the Harry S Truman Research Institute For The Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University and the Palestine Consultancy Group (PCG). The event's goal was to discuss the effect of the peace process on the Israeli and Palestinian societies. The Palestinian and Israeli referees alternately introduced their research topics. In fact they were dealing with the discussion of the psychological aspects as a result of the changed political situation. The topics were intentionally related to the very daily life, for example education, literature and children's literature, theater and poetry, mass media, movies, the economical relations and the development of political attitudes. The participants of this conference were primarily representatives of Israeli and Palestinian universities. The importance of this dialogue was continually pointed out by the participants. I want to thank the head of the Truman Institute, Prof. Moshe Maoz and Dr. Sari Nusseibeh, chairperson of the Palestine Consultancy Group. Without their engagement and that of their colleagues the event would not have been possible. In this publication the reader will find a summary of the lectures, which have been read during the conference. I hope that they will contribute to a better understanding of the other.
