Foxing largely confined to tissue guards. These two volumes were first published in parts from 1823; this is the first edition in vols. Presumably the project was begun immediately after the death of the great neoclassical sculptor in October 1822. Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi 1760-1836 was a brilliant Venetian salonnière and a close friend of Canova; her Opere di scultura e di plastica di Antonio Canova from which the descriptions in these vols are translated was first published in 1809. Byron in an 1816 letter to his friend Thomas Moore described her as a 'very learned unaffected good-natured woman . She has written very well on the works of Canova'. Henry Moses 1781/2-1870 printmaker: Thomas Dodd in his biographical catalogue of English engravers described him as an 'eminent artist distinguished for the neatness and purity of outline' who attained 'the highest proficiency in the decorative and ornamental department of the arts' Dodd in ODNB. His lucid neoclassical engravings with their 'Flaxmanesque manner of etching outlines free from shading or modelling' ODNB are well-suited to depicting the works of Canova. These vols provide an early record of the relocation of several of Canova's works to England as spoils of the Napoleonic Wars notably the colossal statue of Napoleon himself recorded here as 'now in the possession of the Duke of Wellington' and still on display in Wellington's London residence Apsley House. A third volume of the Works of Canova again with engravings by Moses & translations of text by Albrizzi was first published in parts by Septimus Prowett in 1827. These vols are the earliest 2-volume version. Influential work in original binding. Vol.1 is sound VG. Vol.2 slightly shaken.~Robust packaging. All UK orders trackable others on request. Robert Starr: "Recent research in cerebral physiology has been directed toward the subject of the localization of sensory areas on the cortex of the brain and has been productive of many very interesting discoveries. The investigations of Wernicke and Stilling in the anatomy of the brain and the observations of numerous pathologists in cases of hemianopsia have confirmed in such a striking manner the conclusions of the physiologist Munk regarding the cortical area governing vision that a summary of the facts deserves attention. A knowledge of these facts is necessary both for the exact examination of cases and for an accurate record of autopsies ; as it seems probable that many errors in the past have been due to the imperfect investigation of symptoms and of lesions. The experiments of Munk first announced in 18781 awakened so much criticism that he deemed it necessary to repeat them especially as they differed in their results from those of Ferrier.2 In 1881 a second series of researches was reported by him confirming his first conclusions3 while in the same year Ferrier was led by further experiments to modify his earlier statements4 and to bring them more nearly into accord with those of the German physiologist. At the recent July meeting of the Physiological Society of Berlin 1883 Munk made a final statement summing up the result of the work of the past seven years5 and demonstrating the accuracy of his conclusions. " Moses Allen Starr 1854-1932 'Professor of Neurology in the College pf Physician and Surgeons at Columbia University New York City' "had plans for a career in classical culture when he graduated from Princeton and embarked for Germany to study Greek and Roman history. In Berlin however several visits to Helmholtz's laboratory revived a latent interest in natural science. He returned to his native New York graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons P&S Columbia University did a residency at Bellevue Hospital then returned to Europe to work at Heidelberg Vienna and Paris. On return to New York he set up a laboratory in his home and in 1884 published an essay on the sensory tracts of the central nervous system elucidating some of the then-current questions of myelination. Starr's regard as an American pioneer in the field of cerebral localization stemmed from his participation in a symposium on that subject with the famous English neurologist David Ferrier and neurosurgeon Victor Horsley who were delegates to the 1888 Congress of American Physicians and Surgeons in Washington D.C. He became professor of nervous diseases at the Montreal Neurological Institute. During neurosurgical operations they electrically stimulated the surface of the exposed unanesthetized brains of patients who were talking. On-going speech was blocked by excitation of the parietal-temporal area the inferior frontal area and the supplemental motor area of the left hemisphere Penfield & Roberts 1959. Has engraved title page as well as letterpress title page; the engraved title is slightly trimmed at the upper edge. A polemic addressing some of the pitfalls of a democratic republic foretelling the rise of a demagogue including the need for truthful information to be imparted to an informed public and the "baneful tendency of favoritism in a free republic." A polemic in the style of Matthew Carey but with some interesting anti-semitic content in its historical considerations: a diatribe against Absalom "Moses reviled as a monarchist" "The ingratitude of the Hebrew Republic toward the family of Gideon" "Sudden transitions from Republicanism to Monarchy in the instances of the ancient Hebrews and modern Britons" -- some of the chapter headers. Ezra Sampson a Congregational minister was born at Middleborough Mass. Feb. 12 1749. He graduated at Yale College 1773 and became pastor of the Congregational Church at Plympton Mass. Feb. 1775. He also officiated as chaplain in the Revolutionary army and was settled at Hudson N.Y. by 1796. While there he became associated with Rev. Harry Crosswell in the editorship of The Balance one of the first literary journals in the United States 1801-4. He edited for a year 1804-5 the Connecticut Courant and became judge of Columbia County in 1814. He died in New York City Dec. 12 1823. Shaw & Shoemaker 3045. 189540853Chicago: S. Ettlinger Printing Co 1895. 1st edition. Original green paper wrappers 12mo 56 pages. The author Isaac S. Moses is prominently listed on the title page as Rabbi of Kehilath Anshe Mayriv KAM Chicago's first Synagogue; these were sermons he delivered there. In addition the title page lists S. Ettlinger Printing Co. in Chicago as the publisher though the wrappers list Bloch in New York. This probably means that Bloch bought the printed run or the remains of it or the plates and put their own outer label on and then continued the distribution under their own name. Singerman 4882 simply listing Ettlinger in Chicago as publisher with no mention of Bloch. In his early days in the United States Isaac Moses "was considered a radical Reformer but later he took a more moderate position. In 1884 he introduced his own prayer book Tefillat Yisrael. Moses was a founding member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and a member of the Reform committee charged with compiling an official prayer book. The appearance of the Union Prayer Book in 1894 has been credited to his personal initiative in preparing and circulating a manuscript when the committee's work seemed to be leading nowhere. Moses also published a number of sermons and textbooks for children. His Sabbath School Hymnal first issued in 1894 ran into 14 editions. While in Milwaukee he edited the weekly Der Zeitgeist 1880-82" encyclopedia.com. In one of these sermons Rabbi Moses discusses the evils that occurred in Egypt and then goes on to say "Does not our civilization show the most alarming symptoms of the evils and the diseases of Egypt We have fought for the emancipation of the negro but the enslavement of the masses by our modern indutrial system threatens to become a plague worse than ever befell the birth-place of Moses."
