1768EXP4-B-3London: T. Jones 1768-1778. Leather. Fair. 8.5" by 5". None. A set of five very scarce volumes by Abraham Tucker under the pen name of Edward Search in leather binding. Very important texts and all contemporary editions are extremely rare. As these were published separately they are usually seen individually and a five volume collection is highly unusal. The original work was seven volumes broken in to parts. Not special externally and would really benefit from the attentions of a good binder but we keep them here are entirely original. Bound and marked as an eight volume set this collection comprises Volumes III Volume II Part I- 1768 Volume V Volume II part III-1768 Volume VI Volume III Part I- 1778 Volume VI IV Part II- 1777 and Volume VIII Volume V Part III- 1777 The volumes are major works of eighteenth century philosophy and theology anticipating utilitarianism and holding that "every man's satisfaction" is the ultimate end of any action. Contains the bookplate of one George Phillips to the pastedown of volume III. In calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally there is wear to the boards joints extremities and backstrips with tenderness to hinges. The front board is detached but present to the sixth volume and missing to the eighth. Internally the pages are firmly bound but are somewhat spotted and age-toned with some creasing. Overall: FAIR due to binding though internally presentable. Fair T. Jones hardcover

30892 p.l. viii 236 pp. 8vo attractive antique calf double gilt fillet round sides flat spine gilt uncut. Paris: veuve Tilliard et Fils 1805.

The rare sale catalogue of the library rich in oriental books and manuscripts of Anquetil-Duperron 1731-1805 French orientalist and brother of the historian Pierre Anquetil. Abraham Hyacinthe had a fascinating early life: while unsuccessfully studying for the priesthood in Paris and Utrecht he developed a passion for Hebrew Arabic Persian and other languages of the East. He travelled to India as a private soldier in 1754 in order to search for the works of Zoroaster. Granted free passage he learned modern Persian in Pondicherry and Sanskrit at Chandernagore. When war broke out between France and England Anquetil-Duperron travelled widely throughout India on foot learning further languages and studying the antiquities and sacred laws of the Hindus.

He returned to Europe in an English vessel ultimately arriving in Paris in 1762 with 180 oriental manuscripts. He devoted many of the following years to scholarship editing and publishing many important oriental texts. The French Revolution seems to have greatly affected him: during that period he abandoned society and lived in voluntary poverty on a few pence a day.

A fine copy. 1600 lots and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Trivial offsetting to free endleaves from turn-ins a couple of tiny spots of foxing otherwise in nearly pristine condition with no signs of use inside or out.

This is an exceptionally well-preserved copy of a work that was specially compiled printed and bound to honor the memory of both the author and the subject. Prominent Minneapolis attorney businessman and philanthropist Thomas Lowry 1843-1909 grew up in Illinois and Lincoln had assisted his father with several legal matters when he was practicing law. Young Lowry attended all of the Lincoln-Douglas debates and became a devoted admirer of the man who would go on to preserve the Union. After a successful career that included establishing the street car system in Minneapolis Lowry contracted tuberculosis and spent the last four years of his life as an invalid. With excess time on his hands he began writing down his memories of Lincoln in a "fragmentary manner" as Mrs. Lowry explains in the preface. After her husband's death Beatrice Goodrich Lowry 1854-1915 compiled these memories and some Lincoln letters in her husband's effects into the present volume which she had printed and bound to distribute to her husband's friends. Edmund Brooks a Minneapolis bookseller who specialized in fine bindings helped her to arrange for printing by the esteemed Chiswick Press and binding by the one of the most eminent English workshops of the day Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe met as boys attending Douglas Cockerell's bookbinding classes at the L. C. C. Central School. Cockerell was so impressed by their skill that he hired Sutcliffe as a finisher and Sangorski as a forwarder. In 1901 Francis and George went into business for themselves and before long they had become two of the most renowned English binders of the 20th century. Preserved over the years in its clamshell box our binding looks virtually the same as it did the day it left the bindery. Copies of this work do appear on the market but their condition is seldom as good as seen here. Privately printed [by the Chiswick Press] for Beatrice Lowry and Her Friends, Minneapolis unknown
