From 1626 to 1658 Wicquefort served as Brandenburg's envoy to the French court. However Cardinal Mazarin suspected him of involvement in a dubious correspondence and had him imprisoned in the Bastille. After a year he was released with a French pension and moved to The Hague as the representative of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. In 1675 he faced imprisonment again this time by the Dutch government on charges of treasonous dealings with the French. Sentenced to life and his assets confiscated he later escaped to Celle where he died. Brunet V p.1442 </em> hardcover

Leather_bound. 315p. 8x10.25 inches text in French second edition of the second part of a two volume treatise all edges of textblock tinted red mild toning to paperstock general abrasion and wear to pressed-calf casebinding full leather over boards with five raised bands gilt titles and decorations on spine edges stained red. Bits of card show at corner-tips but the hide was well-tanned and would be responsive to restorative measures i.e. the hide could use a coat or two of archival-grade leather dressing. The Dutch Ambassador's guide to the functions of an ambassador and his recollections of his work in France England and Holland and time spent imprisoned in the Bastille. Nach einem Aufenthalt in der Bastille gelangte er nach Holland. wo er für John de Witt wirkte Sein bekanntestes Werk 'LAmbassadeur et ses Fonctions' eine interessante 'Mischung aus Fakten und nützlichen Bemerkungen' wurde das am meisten beachtete Werk über Diplomatie im 18. Slightly worn contemporary full calf spine gilt with raised band and rubbed red label marbled boards tears on top of spine. Owner’s signature Schröder on title crossed over with ink. From the library of Fredrik von Friesendorff with his engr. bookplate. This classic and important work on diplomats and diplomatic skill was first published in The Hague in 1680-81. This is the expanded Marteau-edition from 1690. The Dutchman Abraham de Wicquefort 1606-1682 is the first author whose focus was on the actual diplomatic practise. “The purpose of this work was to describe what an envoy does and how he should conduct himself. He was on the threshold of a new development and gave the literature on diplomacy a new orientationâ€. Wicquefort was from 1642 Brandenburg’s diplomat in Paris but was imprisoned by Cardinal Mazarin in 1659 and expelled in 1660. He stayed in The Hague but was in 1679 imprisoned for life for high treason and he wrote “L'ambassadeur et ses Fonctions†in prison. Beside this book and a history of the Netherlands he also translated the travels by Olearius into French. hardcover
