192674<p><strong>A SCARCE AND IMPORTANT YIDDISH CHILDREN'S BOOK WITH POEMS BY ABRAHAM REISEN </strong>1876 - 1953<strong>. REISEN'S POETRY IS ACCOMPANIED BY COLOR MODERNIST ILLUSTRATIONS BY VARIOUS JEWISH ARTISTS. <br /><br />Abraham Reisen was a "Yiddish Poet short- story writer playwright and editor. </strong> He was born in Russia travelled to Minsk Warsaw Krakow and Berlin - until he came to New York in 1914.<br />His poetry "while having an understated romanticism and melancholy irony a proportion of his work criticizes the poverty and social problems of the day" Dan Wyman 2012.<br /><br />Each page has a poem framed by modernist color illustrations usually one or two colors by various artists in brown yellow orange-red green and black.<br />The pictorial boards of the cover have age-darkened light brown stains but the illustration "comes through". The back cover also has light brown stains - especially at the bottom edge - this may be a water stain edges and corners rubbed green spine is in good shape. Blank eps are clean but paper at inner hinge has a light break - but it is tight. Internally the book it is in very clean and tight condition. Flyleaves with short foredge chips and tears and a bit soiled both hinges had been badly split but have been very nicely restored but with evidence of repair and causing the front board to sit a bit proud at the foredge sound and near very good; the text has been nicely preserved. The final page prints an advertisement for other works by Cahan offered by New York's B. Weinstein. Cahan was an author and socialist leader best known for being the longtime editor of the Yiddish-language newspaper Foreword and the semi-autobiographical novel The Rise of David Levinsky.
