The tables are probably computed and computed and enlarged by Adriaen Vlacq and based on those of John Napier and Henry Briggs" Crone 210.The present work comprises 7 parts with individual title-pages each dated 1657 bound and published as one with two general title-pages and a comprehensive index. So far back as 1667 Abraham Mylius in his treatise "De Animalium origine et migratione populorum" argues that since there are innumerable species of animals in America which do not exist elsewhere they must have been made and placed there by the Deity" Huxley. Blue embossed stamps on fep and bep emblazoned with a crest and "One Pound" as well as a sliver of metal embedded. Edges a little scuffed and soiled but in largely great condition. Binding tight and interior bright and clean. Includes a Latin translation of the first book appended at rear 23 pages. Excellent early impression of this rare poetic work. Each engraved leaf is engraved on one side only. Original full leather binding is moderately worn on the exterior hinges and extremities with minor warping of front board. Front endpapers are lacking. Minor staining to the fore-edge of the majority of pages affecting the margins only. Minor foxing scattered throughout in several instances affecting the plates. Previous owner's stamp circa 1900 on title page and half title page and bookplate on front pastedown endpaper: Henry von Wackerbarth Chicago. The final two leaves of plates are creased on the edge not affecting the engravings and the rear endpapers are heavily creased. A very attractive first edition of this work. The second much enlarged edition by the Dutch classical scholar Jacobus Gronovius of the first extensive repertory of Greco-Roman rings with intaglio-carved gems by Abraham Gorlaeus Van Goorle; 1549-1608 which Gorlaeus had published in 1601 with the title Dactiliotheca seu annulorum sigillarium quorum apud priscos tam Graecos quam Romanos usos 1601 as a catalogue of engraved gems in his cabinet of curiosities.The present edition is also remarkable as one of the earliest books too incorporate - at the end of vol. 2 pp. 1-32 - a medieval treatise on precious stones by Marbodi the bishop of Rennes ca. 1035-1123: Marbodaei Galli Poetae vetusti Carmen de gemmis sive lapidibus pretiosis. The poem is written in exquisite Latin metre and each of the 63 sections is devoted to a single gem explaining its formation appearance etymology exotic origins medical properties and preparations. In his prologue Marbodi says it is partly based on a work on the subject by the first century Arabian King Evax addressed to Emperor Tiberius.With three inserted pages with titles in German translation written by a 19th-century hand and one leaf inserted with 43 tracings of rings etc. from the book also in a 19th-century hand-writing. Our example was published by Balthasar Moretus at the Plantin Press in the final edition of the Parergon. Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is generally considered the first modern atlas of the world originally published in 1570. Ortelius gathered and selected the best available cartographic knowledge and presented it in a single volume duly credited and finely engraved in a consistent style with explanatory text. The Theatrum was very decorative and hugely popular amongst the wealthy and educated running into over forty editions in Latin and the major European languages. For Ortelius himself however his accompanying atlas of ancient geography the Parergon was a "personal work" Koeman. He seems to have regarded himself first and foremost as an antiquary and rather than copying other people's maps he drew the originals himself; they were subsequently engraved for him by the master engraver Jan Wierix. The results have to be evaluated as the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century Koeman. Koeman Atlantes Neerlandici Ort 46. Ortelius was born on 14 April 1527 in the city of Antwerp which was then in the Habsburg Netherlands modern-day Belgium. The Orthellius family were originally from Augsburg a Free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1535 the family had fallen under suspicion of Protestantism. Following the death of Ortelius's father his uncle Jacobus van Meteren returned from religious exile in England to take care of Ortelius. Abraham remained close to his cousin Emanuel van Meteren who would later moved to London. In 1575 he was appointed geographer to the king of Spain Philip II on the recommendation of Arias Montanus who vouched for his orthodoxy. He travelled extensively in Europe and is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; in southern western northern and eastern Germany e.g. 1560 15751576; France 15591560; England and Ireland 1576; and Italy 1578 and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558. Beginning as a map-engraver in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books prints and maps and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. The map is ornated with three cartouches in the upper middle the title cartouche in the upper right corner we find a cartouche with the privilegium. On the lower right side cartouche with text. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views moreover the map is ornated with ships. Ortelius was born on 14 April 1527 in the city of Antwerp which was then in the Habsburg Netherlands modern-day Belgium. The Orthellius family were originally from Augsburg a Free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1535 the family had fallen under suspicion of Protestantism. Following the death of Ortelius's father his uncle Jacobus van Meteren returned from religious exile in England to take care of Ortelius. Abraham remained close to his cousin Emanuel van Meteren who would later moved to London. In 1575 he was appointed geographer to the king of Spain Philip II on the recommendation of Arias Montanus who vouched for his orthodoxy. He travelled extensively in Europe and is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; in southern western northern and eastern Germany e.g. 1560 15751576; France 15591560; England and Ireland 1576; and Italy 1578 and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558. Beginning as a map-engraver in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books prints and maps and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. In 1560 however when travelling with Mercator to Trier Lorraine and Poitiers he seems to have been attracted largely by Mercator's influence towards the career of a scientific geographer.
