First edition specially bound for presentation and lettered in gilt "Presented to his Excellency Field Marshal the Right Honourable the Viscount Alexander of Tunis K.G. Governor-General of Canada on the Occasion of the Dedication of the Jewish Community Services Building. Montreal February 26 1950". Alexander was Governor General of Canada from 1946 to 1952. He presided over the dedication ceremony for the building which housed Jewish philanthropic and social-service organizations in Montreal. In his address Alexander called the new building "a challenge to the future and to the great work waiting to be done". He also paid tribute to "those members of the Jewish faith who fought under my command during the recent war" singling out the military achievements of the Jewish Brigade from Palestine The Montreal Star 27 February 1950 The volume presents the Five Books of Moses and the Haphtaroth - the prophetic readings appointed for the weekly Torah readings - in Hebrew and English together with an English digest of commentary. Abraham Cohen 1887-1957 was one of Britain's leading biblical scholars and president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews from 1949 to 1955. Octavo 228 x 150 mm.
