IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION and the culmination of a long and arduous process to collect all extant writings or public utterances that came within the scope defined by the editors and editorial advisers. For all intents and purposes this was the definitive edition and would only be expanded by the inclusion of letters or other documents that might come to light in the years after the initial publication. The work was created almost entirely from original manuscripts and to this day remains the most fundamental and important work in any collecting of or interest in Lincoln’s work and writing.
