1801177821Dublin: Printed by N. Kelly and William Porter for P. Wogan Gilbert and Hodges W. Porter J. Moore and B. Dornin 1801. Political economy and the Anglo-Irish union Fourth Irish edition of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM in a handsome contemporary Irish binding. Towards the end of the Wealth of Nations Smith outlines an expansive and audacious plan for the political-economic consolidation of the British Empire. In this plan Ireland was to be united with Great Britain in a move largely modelled on the Anglo-Scottish union of 1707. Smith stresses the political and economic benefits to the Irish anticipating that the move would end British trade restrictions and even neutralize the fractious nature of Irish politics. Ironically Smith's wider theories of political economy in the Wealth of Nations were often co-opted by Irishmen diametrically opposed to his political proposals most notably the United Irishman Arthur O'Connor 1763-1852 whose approach to democratic land reform was "a radicalised version of Smith's political economy" Andersen. The United Irishmen mounted a rebellion in 1798 the failure of which led to precisely the Anglo-Irish union advocated by Smith. This fourth Irish edition was the first to be published in the newly formed United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. 2 vols octavo 204 x 131 mm pp. xiii 1 498; viii 489. 61; lacking blank A1 in vol. Adlersparre to was an admirer of Adam Smith. In 1799-1800 he published in the 'Läsning' his own Swedish translation of several selections from Wealth of Nations. In some cases Adlersparre added footnotes making it easier for the readers to apply Smith's ideas to Swedish conditions. Those translations to the best of my knowledge were the first ones of Wealth of Nations in Sweden. They were followed by translations of other parts of Wealth of Nations published in 1800 amd 1808. Written by himself and lithographed by Victor Adam.

Victor Adam 1801-1865 is better known for his later works of pictorial journalism or for his many lithographs of military history than for his early works of fashion and society life. "His immense production contains many amusing albums concerning the life of the time such as Un an dans la vie de jeune homme. This series is a sort of bourgeois rake's progress. A young man from the country comes to Paris to sample its pleasures. He acquires a new wardrobe; buys a horse; is duped by gamblers makes a conquest of a pretty lady; exclaims 'Jasmin! she seemed so artless' as he lies recovering from the resulting malady; is imprisoned for debt; writes at last to 'the old one' a buxom woman of means; and is accepted by her in the final plate. The series is unusual among the albums of the time in that it tells a consecutive story and it certainly has more spirit and finish than Adam's usual work" Ray.

A lovely copy of the first book by this gifted painter and illustrator. 1774146600Paris: Chez Valade 1774-75. First edition of the second French translation of Scottish moral philosopher and economist Adam Smith's ground-breaking first work The Theory of Moral Sentiments London 1759 in an attractive contemporary binding. This work introduced the concept of the "invisible hand" guiding individuals to advance community interest laying the philosophical ground work for his Wealth of Nations. Smith evidently dissatisfied in the quality of the first French translation Metaphysique de l'ame Paris 1764 made by Marc-Antoine Eidous and based on the second English edition is reported by the translator of this edition as having been "mortified" by the first attempt. Jean-Louis Blavet 1719-1809 translator and librarian of the Prince de Conti was recommended to Smith by Madame des Boufflers the Prince's mistress and duly undertook this entirely new translation from the third English edition of 1767 adding an extensive table of contents. The work was far from a commercial success which according to Dugald Stewart Smith blamed on Blavet leading to the eventual commission of a third French translation by Sophie de Grouchy the prominent salon hostess during the early French Revolution and under Napoleon and was the wife of the philosopher the Marquis de Condorcet. 2 vols duodecimo 168 x 97 mm. Juan Rulfo’s "Pedro Páramo" is a monument of Mexican literature and one of the most influential novels of the 20th century. Juan Rulfo was a photographer and a fiction writer known for his two books "El Llano en Llamas" a collection of short stories published in 1953 and the 1955 novel "Pedro Páramo". He was born in Apulco in the Mexican state of Jalisco in 1918 and died in Mexico City in 1986.

Gabriel García Márquez said he felt blocked as a novelist after his first four books and that it was only his life-changing discovery of "Pedro Páramo" in 1961 that allowed the composition of his masterpiece "One Hundred Years of Solitude". Marquez noted that all of Rulfo's published writing put together "add up to no more than 300 pages; but that is almost as many and I believe they are as durable as the pages that have come down to us from Sophocles".

Enrique Chagoya has made ten color prints for the book. They are highly unusual in that they are printed on both sides of thin translucent handmade Japanese paper of a tan-brown color. On the front recto are portraits of Mexicans from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries printed in a dark blue with background imagery printed in green on the other side. As Chagoya has written in his artist statement for the book "The drawings are not an illustration of 'Pedro Páramo' because the story does not need illustrations. It is more like a visual duet and instrument playing a counterpoint parallel to the novel."

The extra print is presented in a tube with documentation on the outside. Smaller parts of the book had previously been translated into Swedish in 1800 1804 and 1869 but the present translation is considered the first actual translation of the work even though some parts have been excluded by translator Emil Sommarin who based his translation the 5th English edition the last edition to be supervised by Adam Smith himself. It is to this date the only Swedish translation of the work which tells us a lot about the history of Swedish economics. 1819133843London: Printed for William Allison & J. Maynard; Edinburgh: W. Blair 1819. Early edition of Adam Smith's magnum opus and cornerstone of economic thought. Octavo 3 volumes bound in contemporary full calf gilt titles to the spine red and green spine labels. In near fine condition. An exceptional set of this classic work. Adam Smith's masterpiece first published in 1776 is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of and the principles behind modern capitalism. "The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory.his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange.Labour represents the three essential elements-wages profit and rent-and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy Smith passes to its matter -'stock'- which encompasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control. The Wealth of Nations is not a system but as a provisional analysis it is complete convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" PMM. Printed for William Allison & J. Maynard; Edinburgh: W. Octavo 3 volumes bound in full calf gilt titles to the spine morocco spine labels. In near fine condition rebacked. A. Strahan and T. Cadell unknown

He was a so called 'Apostle of Linnaeus' a member of a group of students who carried out botanical and zoological research throughout the world under the guidance of Carl Linnaeus 1707-1778. Afzelius started working for the British Sierra Leone company in 1789 and made two expeditions to Western Africa with them the first in 1793-1793 and the second 1794-1796. He is one of the very first European botanists known to study fungi in Western Africa. Although his notes drawings and specimens survived the journey his findings were only published posthumously. First in 1837 as part of a dissertation by physician Carl Mauritz Nyman 1813-1886. Azfelius' work was then published on its own in 1860 which is the present edition. The text leaves are 3 cm shorter than the plates and are somewhat browned leaf 3 has been restored in the inner margin without loss of text the first plate is stained in the upper and lower margin without affecting the image.
