Contemporary binding in full porphyry calf. Spine with four raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons as well as a red morocco title-label. Double gilt fillet framing the covers. All edges marbled. Adam Billaut 1602-1662 was one of the first working-class poets; Les chevilles by Master Adam appeared in 1644 and had great critical success. Billaut became the protégé of the Prince de Condé was pensioned by Richelieu and admired by his peers. If his poetry shines little through elegance in a century that was full of it his language is full of verve and originality and his collections make him one of the very first poets of the 17th century one of those whose language is always appreciated devoid of affectation and unnecessary ornaments. A very scarce early edition. In full calf binding. With an engraved frontispiece of the Biblioteca Palatina and two illustrated maps. Collated complete. A detailed latin dictionary in four parts. Consisting of English-Latin Latin-Classical Latin-Proper and Latin-Barbarous. In the English-Latin section more words and properties of the language were set down by several thousands than in any other dictionary at the time. Including the most common Christian names of men and women rendered into latin. Adam Littleton was an English cleric and lexicographer. He was a strong opponent of the parliamentary visitation at the University of Oxford and was thus expelled from the university in 1648. Charles II appointed him a royal chaplain in 1670. He then went on to become prebendary of Westminster Abbey rector of St. Botolph Aldersgate and chaplain to Prince Rupert of the Rhine. With the previous owner's ink inscription dated 1798 to the front free endpaper and another ink signature to the rear free endpaper. A-Dddddddd4 In full calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed. The pages are all there but here the order is two leaves 316pp eleven leaves 232pp. five leaves. The book has been rebacked in modern times and given the title ""Mandelslo's Voyages"" - so perhaps the owner was more interested in the Mandelslo content! Has 3 of the 6 maps. Present are the Baltic map showing present day Lithuania Latvia and Estonia; the map of Persia showing the wider Middle East / Southwest Asia; and the map of the Persian province of Kilan on the Caspian. The frontispiece the two portraits and the in-text Cyrillic chart are also present. Absent are the map of the East Indies; the map of Muscovy; and the map of the Volga. Boards worn and chipped. Pages have yellowing foxing stains smudges creases small tears; there is a small ink margin stain affecting a number of pages in the first volume; there is some top-corner dampstain occasional and marginal in the first volume growing more pronounced towards the end of the second volume and intruding somewhat from the margin on a number of leaves. There are several tears reaching into the text without loss one involving a flap; there is a rust hole obliterating several letters on either side; one leaf is torn halfway up at the hinge. Two facing pages have a long note in the margin in an old hand; an old ownership marking to the reverse of the frontispiece has been scribbled over; the Mandelslo title page has a small modern marking in pen. Ownership of John Parkhurst dated 1772 inked to flyleaf along with notations and page references to the book’s contents written below. <br><br>Adam Olearius c.1599-1671 was a German scholar mathematician geographer and librarian. He became secretary to the ambassador sent by Frederick III Duke of Holstein-Gottorp to the Shah of Safavid Iran and published two books about the events and observations during his travels.<br>He later became court official to Frederick III who was planning to establish economic ties between northern Germany and Russia. As a result in 1633 he was appointed secretary to the ambassadors Philipp Crusius jurisconsult and Otto Bruggemann a merchant from Hamburg sent by the duke to Muscovy and Persia in the hope of making arrangements by which his newly founded city of Friedrichstadt should become the terminus of an overland silk-trade.<br>His second Persian journey was again led by Brüggemann and Crusius with Olearius once more as secretary. They were accompanied by among others the traveller Johan Albrecht de Mandelslo and the poet and physician Paul Fleming. The delegation left Altona on 22 October 1635 embarked at Travemünde reached Moscow on 29 March 1636 and continued on 30 June via Balakhna near Nizhniy Novgorod to Volga in a boat specially built for this purpose by the Lübeck skippers who had been brought along. On 10 October they attempted to cross the Caspian Sea in a self-built vessel at Astrakhan but were shipwrecked in Niyazabad near modern Xaçmaz and Derbent on 14 November 1636. The land journey resumed on 22 December. Besides numerous fortification plans and views the plates show for example bridges tools for digging construction and demolition and a horse-powered Archimedes's screw for pumping water while three plates show the arrangement of troops' quarters in camp. While some of the fortification plans are theoretical others show the fortifications of cities of the Low Countries and Rheinland during the Eighty Years' War. The text is divided into three "books" the first covering the origins development and most recent Dutch improvements in the art of fortification the second systematically presenting the various forms of fortification and the third on offensive and defensive tactics of siege warfare. Together with the excellent plates it gives remarkable insight into the working techniques and tools of fortification building ca. 1630. The lexicon gives terminology for fortification and related fields in French German Dutch and Latin and remains an essential source on the subject.With two small drawings an occasional manuscript note some underlining and a bookplate. With some foxing in the engraved title-page and a few other leaves occasional mostly marginal stains and minor browning but otherwise in good condition. With superficial damage to the boards and worming slightly affecting the boards and badly damaging the backstrip which has been restored at the head and foot.
