Stewart and others. Plates xii xv and xxi misbound with the other half of the double page plates bound in elsewhere. Collated complete. A lively and accessible introduction to zoology for younger readers combining descriptions of mammals birds reptiles and marine creatures with vivid natural history scenes. Adam White 1817-1878 was a Scottish zoologist Fellow of the Linnean Society and entomologist who worked in the Zoological Department of the British Museum where he specialised in insects and crustacea. In a contemporary half roan binding with marbled paper boards. Rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to road. Rubbing to boards with loss to paper. Slight cracking to extremities of joints with slight lifting to backstrip at head of spine. Slight loss to tail of spine. Creasing to spine. Slight splaying to boards. Previous owner"s bookplate and ink inscription to the front pastedown partially obscured by remnants of paper formerly laid down over the bookplate and now removed. Creasing to endpapers with the odd small tear and chip to gutters and fore edge. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd light spot. The odd closed tear and chip to margins of plates not affecting the images. Slight loss to plates xx and xxix only slightly affecting the image. A new edition of the Holy Bible complete with the biblical commentary and critical notes of Irish scholar Adam Clarke. Complete in six volumes. New edition with the author's final corrections. The Holy Bible containing both the old and new testaments carefully printed from the most correct copies of the present authorised translation of the work including marginal readings and parallel texts. With a commentary and critical notes from Adam Clarke an Irish writer and biblical scholar best known for this influential Bible commentary. He was a Methodist theologian who served three times as President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference and also of the Irish Conference. Volume one contains Genesis to Deuteronomy volume two Joshua to Esther volume three Job to Solomon's Son volume four Isaiah to Malachi volume five Matthew to Romans and volume six Corinthians to Revelations. Volume one is illustrated with a portrait frontispiece a folding genealogical table of the patriarchs from Adam to Jacob and a folding map. Volume five is illustrated with two folding maps. Collated complete. This commentary which took Clarke forty years to complete was a primary Methodist theological resource for two centuries. Clarke followed Wesley in opposing a Calvinistic scheme of salvation and considered Scripture itself a miracle of God's grace that "takes away the veil of darkness and ignorance." His teachings followed the Wesleyan-Arminian positions with specific regards to predestination prevenient grace the offer of justification to all persons the possibility of entire sanctification and assurance of salvation. His commentary particularly that on Revelation identified the Catholic Church with the Antichrist. Bound in half calf with cloth covered boards. Externally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Spine label lost to volume V. Front hinge starting to volume V with the front free endpaper loosening slightly. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and light age toning to the extremities. A 1.5" closed tear to page 703 of volume V. A contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper with tide marks to the frontispiece of volume one. Set is heavily foxed but text is still fully legible. Some leaves have detached yet are present and laid in. For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries Adam Clarke’s Commentary was the standard Bible commentary in Methodist Wesleyan and many other evangelical circles. Charles Spurgeon called it “a work of gigantic scholarship” and one of the best commentaries available in his day. Pages are sturdy and tightly bound. Penciled family history of book ownership and bookplate on slightly creased flyleaf. Name stamped on title page - no other writing or markings in the book. Mild musty smell. This stately volume is both visually appealing and functional. Even though it's only Volume IV it is LOVELY copy feels very nice in hand and gives a through commentary of the books Jeremiah through Malachi in the Old Testament. Full refund if not satisfied. J.
