1817241040United Kingdom: Joseph Butterworth 1817. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12. N/a. On offer a scarce - what appears to be a first edition - 8 volume set in contemporary leather bindings of the great Weslyan Arminian commentary by Dr Adam Clarke 1762-1832. Volume I is missing the title page but has the half title page which simply states: 'Dr. Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Old Testament. Volume I. Containing Genesis Exodus Leviticus and Numbers'. There are however half-titles and title pages to all other volumes including the New Testament commentary in 3 volumes - published by J. Butterworth and Son so I am reasonably sure that the Old Testament one is missing and dated 1817 and all other volumes. This set complete with fold-out maps and plates. This set bears the bookplate of George Birch Johnston who I believe was born in Glynn Co. Antrim in March 1811 for this came out of a library with other Irish material but it may be another George Birch Johnston. The Clarke Commentary was very much a Weslyan-Armenian Biblical exposition and provided a counter to the more Calvinist commentaries. It is therefore important in Christian and Methodist church history. Spurgeon famously joked about keeping his John Gill a strictly Calvinist commentator and Adam Clarke a strong Arminian commentaries separated on his bookshelf so they wouldn't "wake him up at night with their arguing". He used the more moderate commentary of Philip Doddridge as a buffer between them. Bound in contemporaneous leather. The fore-edges contemporaneously marbled There is some insect damage to the leather - chiefly to the leather around the joints - more significant to the tail of the Old Testament Number III 1st King's. This also has some more notable scratching to leather to the rear board - Likewise - some damage - 2cm in lengthto the tail of the front joint - volume 4 psalms. Some splitting to the lower external joint of volume I - about 8cm in length. Also some rubbing to the heads/tails of the spines and to some board corners. The text blocks remain very clean with spotting chiefly to the endpapers but scattered elsewhere to some volumes. There is an expertly repaired tear to one page in the first Old Testament volume. A scarce and still handsome 8 volume set which appear to all be first editions. Joseph Butterworth hardcover

Small label pasted on to top left corner of pasted down front free end-paper. Removed stamp to half-title and title-page with stamp and a a few number written to top of title-page. A few light occassional underlining in pencil otherwise internally fine and clean. 1-515 1 IV pp. Rare first Russian translation of Adam Smith's 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments'.The translator Pavel Bibikov 1831-1875 also translated the 'Wealth of Nations' in 1866 both being part of his series the Library of Classical European Writers. Bibikov regarded the two works as complementing each other as he remarks in his preface to this translation "the works reinforce each other. That is why having published in Russian Adam Smith's great work of political economy I decided to translate and publish his other work which is no less remarkable and yet known even less to Russian society than the first" p. 5. "Bibikov's translation probably done via French remained the only Russian version available until 1997". National Library of Scotland.Adam Smith developed a comprehensive and unusual version of moral sentimentalism in his Theory of Moral Sentiments 1759 TMS. He did not expressly lay out a political philosophy in similar detail but a distinctive set of views on politics can be extrapolated from elements of both TMS and his Wealth of Nations. ''In 1869 a monograph on Adam Smith by Konstanty Wzdulski the first in Polish was published as a part of his book Economic Sketches Wzdulski 1869. Earlier it had been printed in â€œGazeta Rolniczaâ€ Agriculture Newspaper. Entitled â€œAdam Smith life and worksâ€ 1723-1790 it consists of four sections: in the first pp. 39-62 a short biography of Smith; in the other three pp. 63- 118 the contents of WN is summarized. As an epigraph Wzdulski used a quote from Pietro Rossi successor to J.B. Say at the CollÃ¨ge de France from his Cours d' Economie politique 1840-42: â€œAdam Smith câ€™est le maÃ®tre de nous tousâ€. The author sought â€œto acquaint Polish readers with the contents of the most important work in the field of political economy up to this time. It is still little known in our countryâ€ Wzdulski 1869 pp. 112-113. In conclusion he defends political economy as a science and - quoting L. WoÅ‚owski - refutes the imputation put forward by representatives of the German historical school that Smith was â€œan apostle of individualism and egoismâ€ Wzdulski 1869 pp. 116- 117. In Chodorowskiâ€™s opinion Chodorowski 1980 p. 155 the defence of classical political economy against the German historical school is significant if we take into consideration that Wzdulski is said to be a precursor of a Catholic trend in economic thought although later from this trend many reproaches against Adam Smithâ€™s economy have been put.
