Slightly later tan half calf over marbled boards spines with raised bands new twin gilt lettered black labels the armorial bookplates of Frederick Henry Norman to the front pastedown of each volume which are affixed over earlier partially obscured gift inscriptions. Expert repairs to several joints and spine ends with darkening to the leather slight loss of gilt a very good set overall. The final three volumes bear the date 1811 the first two volumes the following year. Volume I comprises "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" volumes II-IV "The Wealth of Nations" and volume V Smith's Essays and Dugald Scott's biography. Frederick Henry Norman 1839-1916 the son of a director of the Bank of England was a notable financier and worked for the merchant bank Brown Shipley & Co. for many years. London: T. Cadell and W. First separate edition of Smith's essay on astronomy published in India and very uncommon: WorldCat locates three copies in British institutions BL Glasgow NLS and six more worldwide. The edition was published by Dr A. Burnell judge in Mangalore and a keen adherent of Positivism - he printed it alongside other texts which he deemed upheld the philosophy described in his obituary in The Academy 4 November 1882. The text is reprinted from the 1811 edition of Smith's collected works. The essay was first published in 1795 in Essays on Philosophical Subjects. Using astronomical knowledge as his reference Smith presents a model for the development of scientific knowledge as a series of attempts to create coherent systems to bring order to seemingly chaotic events. "The important historical and philosophical insights in Smith's essay should not be overshadowed by his occasional errors or omissions. His account of the development of astronomy is largely correct and it serves well to illustrate his philosophy of science. Most impressively Smith's emphasis on the subjective aspects of theory choice mirrors the positions of some of today's most prominent philosophers of science. As a scholarly work on the history of astronomy Smith's essay would soon be completely supplanted by for example the work of Delambre. Even so philosophers as late as the early twentieth century would have done well to heed Smith's insights into the nature of scientific inquiry" Timberlake. Octavo. Dessiné d'après nature; lithographie par V. Adam. Printed by Lemercier Bernard et Cie. Light scattered foxing chiefly marginal; some handling wear. About very good. One of the principal plates from Adam's suite documenting the exhumation return and state funeral of Napoleon in 1840. The plate forms part of Victor Adam's 'Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon' and was part of a suite of 20 plates. The scene depicts the official opening of the coffin on St Helena on 15 October 1840 prior to the removal of the remains to France. Napoleon lies in uniform within the opened coffin surrounded by French officers and clergy; British guards are visible beyond the tent. The plate emphasises the reported preservation and recognisability of the body a detail heavily publicised during the Retour des Cendres and central to its political symbolism under Louis-Philippe. This plate is from the original first edition of the complete series of twenty large-format lithographs issued in Paris in 1840. . Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1840.
