Translated by Nadia Helstein. This translation an identical translation published by Knopf in London in 1929 is attributed to John Harland was later described as "abounding in errors" and "generally an inadequate rendering." The military commander Budyonny wanted Babel to be shot after the publication of the stories because of the way he described the utter brutality of the war.
