The rare dust jacket is not present. The first appearance in English of Babel's legendary stories based on his experiences with the 1st Cavalry Army during the Polish-Soviet War of 1920. Translated by Nadia Helstein. This translation an identical translation published by Knopf in London in 1929 is attributed to John Harland was later described as "abounding in errors" and "generally an inadequate rendering." The military commander Budyonny wanted Babel to be shot after the publication of the stories because of the way he described the utter brutality of the war. Pages remain clean and bright with firm binding. There are two large red stamps of a previous owner's address to the half title page and rear endpaper leaving imprints opposite. Notable tanning to endpapers and page edges. Boards have minor wear to the edges with crushing and small splits to spine ends. The spine and some board edges are visible sunned into a lighter shade of orange. Cup ring and other water stains to the front less to the back.
