A 16mo measuring 6 1/4 by 4 inches with the text block close to loose within its original boards held on only by the sewing cords which are woven into the boards. The pages are all uniformly tanned and there are two early prior owner's names on the front paste down. Boards have moderate wear and soiling; front and rear gutters are cracked; previous owner's inscription on front pastedown; first few leaves are starting to detach from text block; text block has light toning. Memoirs of early Texas written by long-time resident Noah Smithwick. Smithwick "drifted to Texas with the tide of immigration in 1927and spent the next thirty-four years of his life in the new territory. First as a Texas Ranger and later as a merchant and mill operator Smithwick was a keen observer of the panorama of passing events and personalities in Texas" from the publisher's prospectus. He gives anecdotes on men he knew such as James Bowie San Houston Stephen F. Austin and others. Smithwick's opposition to secession took him to California in 1861. The present work is the fifth edition of Part II printed in New York and similar in content to the fifth Connecticut edition. It is a comprehensive guide to grammar covering the entire range of grammatical structures including parts of speech verb tenses and modes supported by detailed examples and explanations. Webster states in the preface "It is the business of grammar to inform the student not how a language might have been originally constructed but how it is constructed." The pamphlet attacks "the mad projects of designing men" Jeffersonians who favor "revolutionizing Connecticut" and who seek "to subvert the system of our State government-- to remove from office all those venerable men who have hitherto conducted our affairs and to fill their places with individuals from their own body." The author recommends a list of satisfactory candidates for the upcoming State elections. They include Oliver Ellsworth William Hillhouse David Daggett Chauncey Goodrich Simeon Baldwin Matthew Griswold Jabez Clark-- all respectable Federalists. The volume is divided into eight sections numbered 14 to 21 and continues the historical geographical agricultural and political discussions begun in volume I first published in 1802. The second edition of vol. II adds the text of Washington's Farewell Address. Josiah Meigs president of the University of Georgia praised both volumes in 1804 in a letter to his friend Webster: "I am much pleased with your manner of describing our North America. You have risen from the briars and brambles of detail and given us a luminous and comprehensive view of a WHOLE. I shall use my influence to introduce it into our schools. ." Lewis and Clark were the first to explore the valleys of the upper Missouri Yellowstone and the Columbia and its tributaries. These were uncharted territories for the white men. The first authoritative narrative of the expedition was not published until 1814 although the expedition occupied parts of the years 1804-1806. A near fine fresh copy bound in green cloth centrally stamped with the head of a Bison in brown lettering in black and gilt pictorial spine lettered and decorated in black brown and gilt depicting a tepee no names or bookplates no foxing or fading.
