"In 1808 Webster and Judge Thomas Dawes of Boston one of his wife's brothers-in-law discussed religion in their correspondence. Webster on December 20 1808 wrote a detailed letter summarizing his religious experiences and beliefs; Dawes acknowledged it on February 6 1809 expressing rather liberal views and on February 23 Webster wrote a long answer which became the present text.The compiler believes this printing to have been the first separate edition" Skeel. It was also published in the Panoplist and the Missionary Magazine United edited by Jedidiah Morse. The verso of the front wrapper and both sides of the back wrapper contain a brief summary of the firm Williams & Whiting and publisher's advertisements. First edition small 8vo pp. viii 9-248; full contemporary sheep rebacked; good sound copy with an important presentation "To Professor Silliman with the author's regards." A tear through the presentation has been skillfully mended and as the inscription is written in red pencil it is a bit faint. With Silliman's bookplate on the front pastedown and the subsequent bookplate of Henry McIntosh. In a quarter brown morocco clamshell box. Silliman was perhaps the best-known scientific man in America in the first half of the 19th century a highly respected professor of chemistry and natural history at Yale and a long-time friend of Webster's. Like Webster he was an editor a compiler of textbooks and a prominent Connecticut citizen and Yale alumnus. Skeel 574. S. Babcock unknown

Of this small grammar Webster wrote in an 1805 letter to the American publisher Mathew Carey: "I am compiling a Grammar upon what appear to be the true idioms & fundamental principles of the Language--which I hope to have ready for the press within a year." Webster's goal was to lay out the principles of American English based on its own structure thereby discarding previous grammatical systems which served British English. In it he has developed "the real structure and idiom of our language. I have left Lowth and Johnson and mounted to the original writers as far back as the first Saxon laws and annals. The result is that many of the principles of grammar as taught in Lowth formerly and now in Murray whose book is nothing but Lowth's altered and enlarged prove to be totally false; and I affirm that those grammars now taught introduce more errors than they correct" letter from Webster to Joel Barlow Nov. 12 1807. Although this title was not as successful as his series of spellers and readers Webster considered it one of his two most important works. Twenty years later in a letter to Lemuel Shattuck Nov. 18 1829 Webster writes: "My Philosophical and Practical Grammar was first published in 1807 and a second edition in 1822.
