Stall in Ada Oklahoma. <br /> <br /> Stall 1879-1950 moved to Ada in 1906 and opened shop as a photographer. He is most well known for his photograph of a lynching of 4 outlaws in Ada in 1909. <br /> <br /> In the late 1880s Oklahoma Indian territory began to be occupied by white settlers - a post office was established and named after an early settler's daughter Ada in 1891. Ada incorporated as a city in 1901 and grew quickly with the arrival of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway line. <br /> <br /> Oval image 5 x 2 3/4" laid down on card 5 x 8 1/2". Lower left is printed "N.B. Stall Photographer" and on lower right "Ada Ind. Ter." Card toned edges rubbed top left chipped with loss lower left cracked. Image vg. N.B. Stall unknown

Webster 1758-1843 began work on an American dictionary in 1800 determined to celebrate the country's independence from the British in every sense including establishing distinctively American spellings of words like "color" and "center." "Webster was "an ardent nationalist and he wanted to stress the political separation from Britain by the cultivation of a separate American language" - PMM. His focus on usage set a new standard for accuracy of definition. The dictionary includes some 70000 words far beyond the previous record of 58000 and Webster wrote every word of the manuscript himself. "There were 2500 copies printed in boards uncut or full calf at $20 for the two volumes" - Grolier. unknown
