Print size: Folio 34x25 cm. glued on a paper sized: 43x33 cm. Signed on the bottom corner by pencil as 'Cham'. Text is in French: 'Le Cosaque: Mon honoeur est engage je ne retirerai ma main qu'avec votre foulardet tout ce que vous avez dans votre poche!'. Ottoman and Russian soldiers in front of the 'Provinces Danubiennes' signboard. With Autograph letter signed 'Cham' in 1875 March 27 to an unknown friend. 1 p. Size: 14105 cm. In French. Cham was raised by a family who wished for him to attend a polytechnic school he instead attended painting workshops hosted by Nicolas Charlet and Paul Delaroche and began work as a cartoonist. He eventually took up the pseudonym of "Cham". In 1839 he published his first book Monsieur Lajaunisse which began a career that would span 40000 drawings. In 1843 he began to be published in newspapers like Le Charivari a publication where he was staff for thirty years. Later works included Proudhon en voyage and Histoire comique de l'Assemblée nationale. He wrote several comic plays towards the end of his life. "Mon cher ami de noce et festin Mardi. Qu'il y long temps que je n'ai en le plaisir de vous voir! Triste! Triste! Trei a vous. A Samedi soir 27 Mars 1875.". i.e. "My dear friend wedding and feast Tuesday. 18684980Paris: Arnaud dé Vresse 1868. First edition. A collection of hand coloured plates by Cham. We have seen records of this item with differing number of plates contained. Ours conforms with WorldCat / OCLC: 213799963 which states that there are 18 plates including the title others range from 10 to 19 plates. The title is uncoloured in this edition but the 17 "Actualités"all have bright and attractive hand colouring. Hardback volume with the title repeated to the front board. This is quite darkened and rubbed and about 1/3rd of the spine is lacking. Binding is weak to the front hinge and has been reinforced with archival tape. The end papers are significantly darkened but the plates less so. They all have the running title "Actualités" to the top. Each has a number to the top right - although there are fairly erratic ranging from number 1 to 285! All deal with the politics of the day including the famine in Ireland Italian Unification just coming to its conclusion and the increased tensions with the Prussians which would soon lead to the Franco-Prussian war. Each plate has the imprint: "Lith. Destouches r. Paradis p.re 28." We have seen other copies which do not all bear this imprint and which do not have numbers to the top edge or which are uncoloured. Overall a decent copy of a scarce item. 35cm x 26cm. . Première édition. Une collection de planches coloriées à la main par Cham. Nous avons vu des enregistrements de cet article avec différents nombres de planches. La nôtre est conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 213799963 qui indique qu'il y a 18 planches y compris le titre d'autres indiquent de 10 à 19 planches. Le titre n'est pas coloré dans cette édition mais les 17 "Actualités" ont toutes des couleurs vives et attrayantes. Volume relié avec le titre répété sur la première planche. Ce dernier est passablement assombri et frotté et il manque environ un tiers du dos. La reliure est fragile au niveau de la charnière avant et a été renforcée avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. Les pages de garde sont considérablement assombries mais les planches le sont moins. Elles portent toutes le titre courant "Actualités" en haut. Chacune porte un numéro en haut à droite - bien qu'il soit assez irrégulier allant du numéro 1 au numéro 285 ! Elles traitent toutes de la politique de l'époque notamment de la famine en Irlande de l'unification de l'Italie qui venait de s'achever et des tensions accrues avec les Prussiens qui allaient bientôt déboucher sur la guerre franco-prussienne. Chaque plaque porte l'empreinte : "Lith. Destouches r. Paradis p.re 28." Nous avons vu d'autres exemplaires qui ne portaient pas tous cette empreinte et qui n'avaient pas de numéros sur le bord supérieur ou qui n'étaient pas colorés. The English Scots and Irish all have fun poked at them with stock characters of English yeomen in smocks Irishmen in rags wielding shillelagh clearly a reference to the famine then raging in Ireland and Scots with tammies and tartan plaid. Each plate is subjoined with a title and humorous descriptive text:=- 'Une femme bien attachée;' 'Le Quaker;' 'Le Recruteur;' 'Visite au Musée;' 'Mariage d'inclination;' 'Les Hauts grades;' 'Philanthropie. Bien entendue' 'Les Boxeurs;' 'l'Écossais;' 'Un Costume national;' 'Baragouin Britannique;' 'In the Stocks;' 'Le Péage du turn-pike;' 'L'Invalide de Chelsea;' and 'Smithfied Market.'.</p><p>The prolific French illustrator Amédée de Noé 1819-1879 produced a number of similar themed works including an idiosyncratic look at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and a series of pamphlets depicting French life dating from the late 1860's. With 2 folding lithographed maps partly coloured by hand and 19 hand-coloured lithographed plates. First edition of an illustrated account of a British campaign in Egypt with all the plates coloured by hand posthumously published from the memoirs of the French count Louis-Pantaléon de Noé 1728-1816. De Noè had sailed for India when his position became insecure under the Directoire. He first describes his journey to India on the Cuffnells and gives a geographical description of the region. He also gives a detailed description of the Indian/British army naming the various regiments and showing its soldiers and their uniforms in the coloured plates. In 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte led a campaign to Egypt and Syria with his Armée d'Orient hoping to conquer the region and weaken British power. In the third chapter De Noé describes the British measures to prevent French success. After some defeats the British despatched a large force from India to Egypt in 1800 and De Noé joined it. From Mumbai they sailed to the Red Sea went ashore at Mecca and ended up in "Kosseir" El Quseir where they had to prepare themselves for a journey across the desert. De Noé describes this journey and the people they encounter stopping at Qina and Girga before reaching Cairo. He describes the city and the Gizeh pyramids before continuing to Alexandria. He gives a description of the Ottomans Bedouins and Mamluks all shown in the plates. The last two chapters deal mostly with the negotiations between the English and the Ottomans to impede the French.With the bookplate of Dr. Jacob Philippe Le Dru on the paste-down. St. John's Newfoundland had two fires in 1817 which were jointly named as the Great Fire of 1817. This pamphlet outlines some of the aid sent from Boston. St. John's was to experience more fires in 1819 and later in the century in 1849 and 1892. The inscribee John Comly 1773-1850 was a Quaker minister and school master.
