Ten issues in all 8vo the first two issues with some worming; all else generally very good in original printed blue wrappers. Worcester 1758-1837 was a fifer in the Revolution and later a clergyman who "came to regard war whether offensive or defensive as unjustifiable" see DAB. A pioneer of the American peace movement in December 1814 he published A Solemn Review of the Custom of War under the pen-name Philo Pacificus "still considered one of the best pieces of anti-war literature ever committed to print and as relevant today as then. In 1815 he founded the Massachusetts Peace Society serving as its secretary until 1828. From 1819 to 1828 he tirelessly edited The Friend of Peace a quarterly periodical of the Society as well as wrote most of its content. In 1828 the Massachusetts Peace Society merged with the newly formed American Peace Society" Wikipedia. Among the contributors besides Worcester himself are Thomas Jefferson and John Jay each contributing letters William Cowper a poem "Pity for Poor Africans"; and extracts from William Penn and Benjamin Franklin etc. Most inside front wrappers and the back wrappers are generally advertising Worcester's text books geographies spellers gazetteers etc. as well as other books published by West & Richardson Joseph T. Buckingham and Cummings & Hilliard. Present in this gathering are: Vol. VIII - XII Boston 1817-1818; Vol. II nos. 3-5 Cambridge 1819; Vol. II no. 12 an Vol. III no. 1 Cambridge 1821. In near fine condition. Rare. Born in Philadelphia on July 14 1785 Jewish American playwright diplomat and journalist Mordecai Manuel Noah became the most important Jewish lay leader in America in the early 19th century and the first Jewish American to reach national fame. After studying law in Charleston South Carolina Noah moved to New York where he founded and edited The National Advocate The New York Enquirer later merged into the New York Courier and Enquirer The Evening Star and The Sunday Times newspapers. A prolific writer he also enjoyed the reputation of being the most popular American playwright in early 19th century America with his Fortress of Sorrento She Would Be a Soldier and The Seige of Tripoli attracting wide audiences. An attractive unsophisticated copy of the early baseball novel written by a friend of Abraham Lincoln's and set in Brooks' boyhood town of Castine here called "Fairport" Maine in the 1840s. This title predcedes by four years "Our Baseball Club and How it Won the Championship" by Noah Brooks. The second and last chapters describe games between the Fairport Nine and a team made up of working class youth. One game continues through the bottom of the ninth even though the home team has won. The main character Billy Hetherington is best friends with Sam Black who is black and also the team's star left fielder. Expert repair to spine ends new endpapers; minor age-toning to text but overall a very attractive copy of an early baseball rarity. The volume includes anecdotes on James Bowie Sam Houston Stephen Austen David G. Burnet Gail Borden Padre Michael Muldoon R.M. Williamson and others. Dobie calls this work "The best of all books dealing with life in early Texas." Jenkins says it's "the most fun to read." This edition adds scholarly commentary by its editor with this specially bound version of the edition with the real Texas currency being relatively uncommon on the market. W.
