Among the rarest and most beautifully engraved Canadian views of the 18th century.<br/> <br/>Published following the conclusion of the French and Indian War and in a period of great public interest in the American colonies the Scenographia Americana was the first series of views dedicated to a large-scale artistic depiction of the American landscape. From the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the West indies the scenes include locations of battles views of strategic provincial capitals and newly secured areas of commercial importance. In 1768 the plates were published in three forms: individually; the complete set of 28 engraved plates priced at four guineas; or as seven separate suites as follows: six views of Canada after Smyth plates 1-6 priced 1 guinea; two views in Canada plates 7-8 priced 7s; two views of New York after Howdell plates 9-10 priced 7s; two views of Boston and Charlestown SC plates 11-12 priced 7s 6d for the pair or 3s 6d individually; six views after Pownall plates 13-18 priced 1 guinea; six views of Havana after Durnford plates 19-24 priced 1 guinea; and four views in the West Indies after Campbell plates 25-28 priced 14s. 1871NL-02276<p><em><strong>With an extremely rare depiction of the Kekionga Ball Grounds — the birthplace of professional baseball in America.</strong></em></p><p>Harvey C. Lowrie's <em>Fort Wayne Guide Map</em> of 1871 offers a comprehensive and detailed representation of Fort Wayne Indiana at a critical juncture in its history. Created during a period of rapid urbanization and industrial growth the map captures the intricate layout of the city showcasing not only its streets and neighborhoods but also key civic institutions transportation routes and significant landmarks.</p><p>Most importantly this map has a unique place in sports history. It is one of the few surviving documents to pinpoint the location of the Kekionga Ball Grounds immortalizing the site of the first professional baseball league game the same year this map was published. No photographs or sketches of the ballpark have survived and this map is the only known printed document that clearly references the ballpark's boundaries giving it a special place in the study of early baseball history.</p><p>The boundaries of the grounds located on the west side of the map on the north side of the St. Mary's River bounded by Mechanics Street west of the St. Marys River are not well known other than as shown on this map. The area may have included additional property leased by the team though no surviving documentation clarifies whether specific lots were part of the legal description.</p><p><em>Creation of the Map: Context and Purpose</em></p><p>The map was compiled and published by Harvey C. Lowrie and printed by the Chicago Lithographing Company in 1871.</p><p>Lowrie's motivation for creating the map would have been multifaceted. Fort Wayne was a burgeoning city at the crossroads of major transportation routes and there was a demand for accurate up-to-date maps for planning business and urban management purposes. Additionally the map served as a commercial venture; such maps were often printed with advertising on the reverse. Lowrie's map is no exception containing numerous advertisements for local businesses.</p><p>The map contains many historical curiosities. It depicts the location of the old Fort Wayne site various public schools early businesses and recreational spaces like the Old Skating Park. It features several prominent railroads which were vital to the city's economic growth. These include the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad the Fort Wayne Jackson & Saginaw Railroad and the Pittsburg Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad.</p><p>These railroads and proposed and abandoned lines highlight Fort Wayne's importance as a transportation hub in the Midwest during the late 19th century. Other notable details include the Wabash & Erie Canal the canal feeder and a basin between the fifth and ninth wards reflecting the city's connection to water-based trade before railroads took center stage.</p><p><em>The First Professional Baseball Game</em></p><p>Fort Wayne holds a special place in the history of American sports specifically baseball as the location of the first-ever professional baseball game. On May 4 1871 the Fort Wayne Kekiongas faced the Cleveland Forest Citys in what is widely regarded as the inaugural game of professional baseball under the newly established National Association of Professional Base Ball Players. The Kekiongas won the game 2-0 with pitcher Bobby Mathews throwing a shutout.</p><p>The game occurred at the Kekionga Ball Grounds a modest facility on the west side of the St. Mary's River. According to Lowrie's map the ballpark was bounded by what is now Huron Street and was situated just north of the city's fairgrounds. The site of the game is of immense historical importance as it marks the formal beginning of professional baseball. This sport would grow to become deeply woven into the American cultural fabric.</p><p>The ballpark constructed in 1870 on the grounds of Camp Allen — a former Union Army camp — was a simple affair. It included a covered grandstand known as the <em>Grand Dutchess</em> which provided seating for spectators particularly women and their male companions. Unfortunately the grandstand was destroyed by fire later in 1871 and the Kekionga Ball Grounds hosted only eight more professional games before the team disbanded.</p><p>Despite its brief use the Kekionga Ball Grounds' association with the first professional baseball game gives it an enduring legacy. By marking the location of this early baseball site Lowrie's map constitutes an essential historical document not only for those interested in Fort Wayne's history and development but also for baseball enthusiasts tracing the sport's origins.</p><p><strong>Census</strong></p><p>Lowrie's map is very rare and no examples have been identified by the OCLC or on the open market.</p><p>An article by Bill Griggs and Jim Nitz on the website of the<em> Society For American Baseball Research</em> discusses the importance of Lowrie's map in some detail: https://sabr.org/bioproj/park/kekionga-ball-grounds-fort-wayne/</p><p>Cartographers:</p><p><strong>Harvey C. Lowrie</strong> was an American mapmaker and civil engineer active in the mid-19th century. He is best known for his cartographic work on the Midwest particularly his 1871 <em>Fort Wayne Guide Map</em>. While little is documented about his early life Lowrie's contributions to urban cartography became significant during rapid urbanization in the United States. His work focused on creating accurate and functional maps for emerging cities which are crucial for infrastructure planning and development. His work continues to be referenced by historians and collectors for its accuracy and attention to detail.</p><p>Condition Description</p><p>Folding map w/ booklet. 1867172462Paris: Amyot 1867. A dreamy copy of a work Sigmund Freud desired First edition of this rare work by the father of lucid dreaming. Only one copy has appeared at auction in the last 50 years and it is uncommon in institutions outside of France and the USA; the British Library does not list a copy and we cannot locate another copy in wrappers. Amyot collapsed shortly after publishing this anonymous work by Hervey one of the earliest oneirologists. As a consequence copies were difficult to come by; Sigmund Freud struggled to acquire this significant book noting in Die Traumdeutung that "Maury Sleep and Dreams Paris 1878 p. 19 argues strenuously against d'Hervey whose book I could not lay hands on in spite of all my efforts". Maury's main contention with Hervey is that Maury considered deep sleep to be dreamless whereas Hervey concluded that there is no sleep without dreams. Les rêves is split into three parts: the first covers Hervey's early dreams and his subsequent research; the second provides a historical overview of dreaming; and in the third Hervey expounds his own theories including techniques to control dreams. The striking wrappers and frontispiece were printed by the Parisian firm Lemercier the largest lithographic company in Paris at the time and well respected for printing chromolithographic illustrations for scientific works. Engraved chromolithographic frontispiece by Lemercier after illustrations by Darjou comprised of one large vignette illustrating a dream described on p. 381 and six smaller vignettes representing "hallucinations" experienced during sleep with tissue guard. The second page includes a list of characters which differs slightly from the film most notably a character named Laura Mason who seems to be the film's character Shanghai Lily played by Marlene Dietrich. Also different is the character Captain Esme Simpson who appears to be the film's character Captain Donald Harvey played by Clive Brook. The film directed by Josef von Sternberg and released in February of 1932 also featured noted Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong as Hui Fei. <br /> <br /> An interesting piece of Pre-Code Era Hollywood likely printed in very small numbers for a select group of people. unknown

The book's exploration of French colonialism and the titular protagonist's subversion of the colonial order has given it a renewed appeal in the 21st century. Having travelled to Asia as a young man Hervey 1900-1951 wrote novels and scripts set in the region and conceived the story for the 1932 film Shanghai Express. He studied Buddhism for a period in Burma and was friends with the Chinese national figurehead Sun Yat-Sen. Small octavo original pictorial cloth slip tipped in on the front free endpaper "With the Compliments of the Author." Signed by Gilman on the front free endpaper above the tipped in note. Additionally inscribed by Gilman on the rear pastedown in pencil with her 225 Riverside Drive address and a note to her publisher which she shared with Hervey White possibly in reference to her book 'Concerning Children' "About this size & quality but with paper cover gilt boards from mss. 5000 Charlotte Perkins Gilman." Gilman was an American humanist novelist writer lecturer advocate and eugenicist who served as a role model for future generations of utopian feminists. Best known for her semi-autobiographical short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis Gilman has written works on gender and male domination that continue to maintain their relevance in today's society. In very good condition with rubbing and a few small losses to the spine and some toning to the rear panel front and rear pastedown front and rear free endpaper. A unique example. Hervey White was an American novelist poet and community-builder who was one of the original founders of the Byrdcliffe Colony in Woodstock New York and the radical artists' colony the Maverick known together as the Woodstock Art Colony. In 1915 White planned the first of the Maverick Festivals which included music and theatrical performances and which would inevitably become an annual celebration of wildness and unity until 1931. Farquhar 8 November 1965." Voge was an early and important climber in the Sierra and he made 35 first ascents in the range naming two peaks. In 1934 Voge and Sierra Club-president-to-be David Brower traversed the High Sierra from Kearsarge Pass area to Yosemite climbing 59 peaks in 69 days. In fact it was Voge who apparently first encouraged Brower to join him as a member of the Sierra Club. Voge was the editor of the early influential The Climber’s Guide to the Sierra Nevada published by the Sierra Club and professionally a PhD chemist who worked for Shell. Farquhar was likewise an accomplished mountain climber as well as an environmentalist historian of California bibliographer and fine press bibliophile among other roles. He served for several years as the president of the Sierra Club. There's a mountain named for him in Kings Canyon National Park. This is his classic and best known book. A large octavo in blue cloth with a frontispiece painting by William Kieth in color black and white photos and illustrations throughout. A near fine copy with light offsetting from the jacket flaps on the endpapers. Prone to romantic entanglements and scandals she had many lovers and it is said that George II was one of many to be swayed by her charms. When she determined to marry the Duke of Kingston Elizabeth feared the scandal of divorce from her first husband Augustus Hervey later Earl of Bristol who wanted a divorce so she instituted a suit of jactitation against him. His negative response ignored she took an oath that she was unmarried and the court so declared her. She married the Duke of Kingston in 1769 and he died in 1770 and left her a substantial estate on the condition that she remain a widow. The duke's nephew Mr. Evelyn Meadow brought suit against her for bigamy shortly after the duke's death while she was traveling in Italy. She returned to England to stand trial. Found guilty she would have been "burned on the hand" but she claimed the privilege of her peerage which served to exempt her from corporal punishment. Most plates and charts are fine but a couple have separation at folds. Excellent paper with very little foxing. The first signature in volume 3 has been poorly reinserted. Bookplate of Captain George Henry Towry of the British Navy. While the contents would grade "very good" the condition of the bindings certainly lower the set a full grade.
