1871NL-02276<p><em><strong>With an extremely rare depiction of the Kekionga Ball Grounds — the birthplace of professional baseball in America.</strong></em></p><p>Harvey C. Lowrie's <em>Fort Wayne Guide Map</em> of 1871 offers a comprehensive and detailed representation of Fort Wayne Indiana at a critical juncture in its history. Created during a period of rapid urbanization and industrial growth the map captures the intricate layout of the city showcasing not only its streets and neighborhoods but also key civic institutions transportation routes and significant landmarks.</p><p>Most importantly this map has a unique place in sports history. It is one of the few surviving documents to pinpoint the location of the Kekionga Ball Grounds immortalizing the site of the first professional baseball league game the same year this map was published. No photographs or sketches of the ballpark have survived and this map is the only known printed document that clearly references the ballpark's boundaries giving it a special place in the study of early baseball history.</p><p>The boundaries of the grounds located on the west side of the map on the north side of the St. Mary's River bounded by Mechanics Street west of the St. Marys River are not well known other than as shown on this map. The area may have included additional property leased by the team though no surviving documentation clarifies whether specific lots were part of the legal description.</p><p><em>Creation of the Map: Context and Purpose</em></p><p>The map was compiled and published by Harvey C. Lowrie and printed by the Chicago Lithographing Company in 1871.</p><p>Lowrie's motivation for creating the map would have been multifaceted. Fort Wayne was a burgeoning city at the crossroads of major transportation routes and there was a demand for accurate up-to-date maps for planning business and urban management purposes. Additionally the map served as a commercial venture; such maps were often printed with advertising on the reverse. Lowrie's map is no exception containing numerous advertisements for local businesses.</p><p>The map contains many historical curiosities. It depicts the location of the old Fort Wayne site various public schools early businesses and recreational spaces like the Old Skating Park. It features several prominent railroads which were vital to the city's economic growth. These include the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad the Fort Wayne Jackson & Saginaw Railroad and the Pittsburg Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad.</p><p>These railroads and proposed and abandoned lines highlight Fort Wayne's importance as a transportation hub in the Midwest during the late 19th century. Other notable details include the Wabash & Erie Canal the canal feeder and a basin between the fifth and ninth wards reflecting the city's connection to water-based trade before railroads took center stage.</p><p><em>The First Professional Baseball Game</em></p><p>Fort Wayne holds a special place in the history of American sports specifically baseball as the location of the first-ever professional baseball game. On May 4 1871 the Fort Wayne Kekiongas faced the Cleveland Forest Citys in what is widely regarded as the inaugural game of professional baseball under the newly established National Association of Professional Base Ball Players. The Kekiongas won the game 2-0 with pitcher Bobby Mathews throwing a shutout.</p><p>The game occurred at the Kekionga Ball Grounds a modest facility on the west side of the St. Mary's River. According to Lowrie's map the ballpark was bounded by what is now Huron Street and was situated just north of the city's fairgrounds. The site of the game is of immense historical importance as it marks the formal beginning of professional baseball. This sport would grow to become deeply woven into the American cultural fabric.</p><p>The ballpark constructed in 1870 on the grounds of Camp Allen — a former Union Army camp — was a simple affair. It included a covered grandstand known as the <em>Grand Dutchess</em> which provided seating for spectators particularly women and their male companions. Unfortunately the grandstand was destroyed by fire later in 1871 and the Kekionga Ball Grounds hosted only eight more professional games before the team disbanded.</p><p>Despite its brief use the Kekionga Ball Grounds' association with the first professional baseball game gives it an enduring legacy. Lowrie</strong> was an American mapmaker and civil engineer active in the mid-19th century. He is best known for his cartographic work on the Midwest particularly his 1871 <em>Fort Wayne Guide Map</em>. While little is documented about his early life Lowrie's contributions to urban cartography became significant during rapid urbanization in the United States. His work focused on creating accurate and functional maps for emerging cities which are crucial for infrastructure planning and development. 1867172462Paris: Amyot 1867. A dreamy copy of a work Sigmund Freud desired First edition of this rare work by the father of lucid dreaming. Only one copy has appeared at auction in the last 50 years and it is uncommon in institutions outside of France and the USA; the British Library does not list a copy and we cannot locate another copy in wrappers. Amyot collapsed shortly after publishing this anonymous work by Hervey one of the earliest oneirologists. As a consequence copies were difficult to come by; Sigmund Freud struggled to acquire this significant book noting in Die Traumdeutung that "Maury Sleep and Dreams Paris 1878 p. 19 argues strenuously against d'Hervey whose book I could not lay hands on in spite of all my efforts". Maury's main contention with Hervey is that Maury considered deep sleep to be dreamless whereas Hervey concluded that there is no sleep without dreams. Les rêves is split into three parts: the first covers Hervey's early dreams and his subsequent research; the second provides a historical overview of dreaming; and in the third Hervey expounds his own theories including techniques to control dreams. The striking wrappers and frontispiece were printed by the Parisian firm Lemercier the largest lithographic company in Paris at the time and well respected for printing chromolithographic illustrations for scientific works. Octavo. Engraved chromolithographic frontispiece by Lemercier after illustrations by Darjou comprised of one large vignette illustrating a dream described on p. 381 and six smaller vignettes representing "hallucinations" experienced during sleep with tissue guard. Original white lithographed wrappers by Lemercier spine lettered and ruled in black front cover with colour illustration after design by Henri-Alfred Darjou and lettered in black rear cover lettered in black over repeating grey pattern edges untrimmed. Porson that the poem "The Devil's Walk" had been actually written by his deceased uncle "Professor Porson".2_ The Devil's Progress pp67 with engraved b/w frontis plus 4 full page b/w engravings and two vignettes designed by R. Seymour and engraved by Evans and Welch. This being another satire expanded from "The Devil's Thoughts" . 3-The Ancient and Modern History of the Devil this final part is missing it's title pages and preface but appears to be complete in two parts. Part one- Ancient history pp1-118 in 10 chapters . Part 2- Modern History pp119-264 in 11 chapters. It states on final page" Printed by J. 187625051<p><strong>1876 UTAH Exploration 1ed Simpson HUGE Railroad Maps PAIUTE INDIANS California</strong></p><p>James Hervey Simpson was a 19th-century American explorer and engineer who was an important catalyst in the topographical discoveries of the American west. His railroad surveys helped establish northern routes in the Dakotas Utah Montana Idaho and Washington all of which helped produce some of the most detailed maps of these territories. These maps and subsequent railroad distance charts contributed to more people traveling and exploring western states and territories like Utah.</p><p>According to Howes on Simpson's exploration route:</p><p>"This route explored in 1859 shortened the distance to California by 250 miles; it was adopted by the overland mail pony express and telegraph. The report was submitted in 1861 but publication had to be deferred because of the Civil War. Forest green linen over boards title printed in white onto upper board and spine top edge stained green 4to 11-1/4 inches tall pp. unpaginated 89 with 90 being a blank illustrated with ten tissue-guarded color plates and each flower in turn followed by it's own accompanying text. Volume with an occasional spot of finger soil to text light offset to eps from DJ flaps and to pre-title from a once inserted card some show through to plate versos old price in pencil to ffep a stray pin head sized bit of green top edge stain to fore-edge and one tissue guard noted with two tiny holes. Unclipped DJ is toned with minor chips and small closed tears. Box is well worn but complete with stains a single corner split to upper half and a pencil note to outside lower half "Gift from Aunt Emma" also loosely inserted is a small piece of paper with " from Aunt Emma" written in pencil. Collated and complete: lxvi 520 pp.; viii 593 1 pp; frontispiece in each volume two plates of facsimile writings of the author Lord John Hervey. <br /> <br /> ABOUT THE AUTHOR & WORK<br /> <br /> Hervey wrote detailed and brutally frank memoirs of the court of George II of Great Britain from 1727 to 1737. He gave a most unflattering account of the King and of Frederick Prince of Wales and their family squabbles. For the Queen Caroline of Ansbach and her daughter Princess Caroline of Great Britain he had genuine respect and attachment. The Princess's affection for him was commonly said to be the reason for the close retirement in which she lived after his death. The manuscript of Hervey's memoirs was preserved by the family but his son Augustus John 3rd Earl of Bristol left strict injunctions that they should not be published until after the death of George III. In 1848 they were published under the editorship of J. W. Croker over 100 years after first composed but the manuscript had been subjected to a certain amount of mutilation before it came into his hands. Croker also softened in some cases the plainspokenness of the original.<br /> <br /> CONDITION REPORT<br /> <br /> The volumes are in VG antiquarian condition for 175-year-old books. <br /> <br /> Exterior and binding: Firm hinges and joints tight text block. Colorful supple morocco. Spines sunned from dark brown to a lovely chocolate brown. Light rubbing to boards and edges. A few small spots of soiling to boards and edges. Some scuffing to paper. Present beautifully on the shelf. <br /> <br /> Interior: The pages are generally bright and white. Light sporadic foxing moderate to heavier foxing at text block extremities and frontispieces. Signs of handling - marginal finger soiling and some smudges. No writing other than the final page in volume I with a marginal pencil number from the binder along the gutter. No ex libris marks or bookplates. It was said he had affairs with many notable figures including Anne Vane Lady Montagu Princess Caroline Francesco Algarotti and possibly Prince Frederick. The memoirs were published posthumously due to their unflattering view of the King Prince Frederick and their family arguments. The manuscript was preserved by Hervey's family and his son left clear instructions that the work was not to be published until George III's death. The work was first published in 1848 having been edited by J W Croker. These memoirs have been regarded as resembling those of Horace Walpole and the two books mutually support the veracity of several of the outlandish claims. An ex-library copy with several blind stamps for Bath public library throughout. This is a limited edition of this work being number 47 of only 50 copies printed on large paper. Limited edition statements found to the first two volumes. With a frontispiece to all volumes. In original cloth bindings with paper spine labels. Externally rubbed to the spines and extremities. Spine labels have faded and have a small amount of loss. Bumping to the head and tail of spines. Library shelf numbers written to the spines. Internally library bookplate and notes to the front pastedown Bath Public Reference Library. Internally binding to all volumes is strained in places. Pages are age toned. In 1859 U.S. Army topographical engineer Captain James H. Simpson explored the Great Basin of Utah mapping a direct300-mile wagon route from Camp Floyd to Genoa Nevada. This faster route which avoided the older southern paths was crucial for the Pony Express the Overland Mail the telegraph line and later the Lincoln Highway.
