Intriguingly Inscribed by the author: "Cordially Inscribed for Dr. Jerome Salinger by the author. Hervey Allen. Poughkeepsie N.Y. April 2 1927." We cannot identify the recipient other than to speculate that he might have been a relative of another New York-dwelling Jerome Salinger better known as J.D. Matching 1926 dates on title and copyright pages no other dates or printings listed. Text is unmarked interior clean. Covers are maroon with gold lettering on front and along spine a few scratches most pronounced on rear board of volume 1. Dust jackets now in mylar show light surface wear. Dj on vol. 1 has three chips/tears each approximately 1 inch in length for along the top edge. Fading along spine light residue a few small stains. Both volumes are signed on the title page by Ira D. Detrich Cardiff 1873-1964. "He directed the agriculture experimental station from 1914-17 at Washington State University where he also headed the botany and plant physiology department. He later founded the Washington Dehydrated Foods Company in Yakima.
