There are undated editions of the "Fortieth Thousand." <br/> "YOURS OR MINE attempted to solve the problem of property ownership. It was an investigation of the basis upon which property was held and the reasons why it was inequitably distributed. The labor reform movement should seek 'fundamental equity' he said and not become another 'assault on vested interests' a 'raid of the have-nothings upon the have-somethings.' .Heywood believed that occupancy and use were the real valid titles to ownership despite the fact that society acquiesced in other claims to ownership in the belief that such deference performed some benefit to the 'general welfare.'" He believed that small communities should govern themselves without a central authority. Interested in labor reform he was a founder of the Worcester Labor Reform League and a delegate to the National Labor Union. In addition to his other causes he believed in "free love" opposed marriage for subjecting women to sexual slavery and supported free choice for women in sexual relations birth control and abortion. Chapter nine is titled 'The Mormon City' p.114-134 and chapter ten is titled 'Salt Lake City' p.114-134. A very uneven account of the Mormons in the Great Basin. "Not to mince the matter I never saw such a collection of ugly shriveled melancholy looking women in my life." An interesting work believed to be a revised version of "The Devil's Thoughts" 1799 but later revised with a letter appearing in the February 14th edition of the Morning Post 1830 with the claim by one R. C. Porson that the poem "The Devil's Walk" had been actually written by his deceased uncle "Professor Porson".2_ The Devil's Progress pp67 with engraved b/w frontis plus 4 full page b/w engravings and two vignettes designed by R. Seymour and engraved by Evans and Welch. This being another satire expanded from "The Devil's Thoughts" . 3-The Ancient and Modern History of the Devil this final part is missing it's title pages and preface but appears to be complete in two parts. Part one- Ancient history pp1-118 in 10 chapters . Part 2- Modern History pp119-264 in 11 chapters. It states on final page" Printed by J. Bailey 116 Chancery lane". 12mo although the poetry pieces are a smaller size paper. Contemporary binding of half brown calf over marbled boards with 5 tooled gilt lines and the title of "The Devil" to spine in good condition with some rubbing to boards rubbing to edges and leather. Inside hand written title page to history of the devil at beginning of book and old catalogue entry for "the devil's walk" to front pastedown. There is a little foxing and toning throughout but generally all pages in very good condition for their age in a tight solid binding. A very interesting item. Scarce.
