This is Hervey's first installment of his history of horse racing in America which would be followed by a two volume set covering the 1665-1865 period. In this volume he covers the 1922-1936 period and provides ample details on races horses and events surrounding the sport. He pays places a good deal of attention to breeding and includes a table on pedigrees. He also includes a table presenting placements and winnings for lead horses for each year. Fine hand-colored frontispiece a folded engraving of Poniatowski astride his horse in full regalia. Nineteen full-page plates throughout the text. Bound with the half-title. Very light foxing and spotting. Several manuscript corrections in ink in an old hand. blank half-title frontispiece xiii iii 149 blank. Quite a handsome copy of a rare work on the use of the lance. OCLC Worldcat lists five libraries throughout the world with the book. ABPC and ESTC list no copies. Montmorency 1778-1827 was a strong proponent of the use of the lance. He studied the Polish system and recommended it to be used in the exercises of the British Cavalry. In 1816 four regiments of British Lancer was formed. Hogan starring Dorothy Lamour Lew Ayers Gilbert Roland Lionel Atwill Anthony Quinn et al. The film is obviously set within the context of the Spanish Civil War and was touted as the "First Spanish War Romance" but the war serves chiefly as a backdrop affording little insight into the causes and events.
