Nato a Trieste, «città di traffici e non di vecchia cultura, varia di razze e di costumi», Umberto Saba ha attraversato la prima metà del secolo partecipando delle sue vicende intellettuali e politiche senza mai omologarsi alle mode del momento, mantenendo una rotta peculiare dovuta al carattere della propria formazione e all'autenticità di fondo della propria poetica. Paradossalmente trascurato a paragone di altri rispetto ai quali e stato inferiore solo quanto a capacità autopromozionale, aspettava da tempo una messa a punto che ne aggiornasse il profilo biografico e la fisionomia di poeta e prosatore. Una trattazione complessiva, che tiene conto di tutti i progressi fatti dalla critica negli ultimi decenni, sia sul piano filologico sia su quello dell'analisi metrico-stilistica e della contestualizzazione storico-culturale dei testi, si propone ora al lettore per conoscere meglio e apprezzare finalmente uno dei classici del nostro Novecento. La sua vena ha influenzato un filone di poesia in apparenza facile e leggero, minoritario ma non per questo meno vivo, da Betocchi e Penna a Caproni e Bertolucci. Personaggio difficilmente gestibile e imprevedibile, deliberatamente provocatore, il suo ruolo nel quadro della letteratura italiana resta principalmente quello del poeta del Canzoniere, ma un posto di rilievo ha anche lo scrittore di Scorciatoie e raccontinì, di Storia e cronistoria del Canzoniere e di Ernesto.
