New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Turkish and English. 432 p. We have, in the last few years, seen an increase in the number of Turkish publications related to the subject of Judaism. However, for those who want to conduct research in this field, the lack of a bibliography covering publications on this subject is a major handicap. This bibliography aims to fill this gap. It comprises over 5000 entries of books, articles and dissertations published in Turkey on the subject of 'Judaism', 'Turkish Jews', and 'Zionism' from 1923 until the end of 2003. The index at the end of this bibliography, classified by subjects, names of authors, translators and advisors, will help the user to access the entries concerning his or her area of interest easily and rapidly.

Five centuries ago, the Jews who emigrated from Spain to Turkish territories brought along their culinary traditions as well as their religious and social traditions. These traditions have passed on generation after generation and have become our heritage. Due to changes in lifestyles and life circumstances, we risk losing some of these traditions. Our people spend less and less time in their kitchens and they tend to prefer more practical meals. The recipes of the main Sephardic dishes that are cooked in Turkey are compiled in this book, in order to somehow preserve the disappearing Sephardic culinary traditions. General Characteristics of Sephardic Dishes: In general, the preparation of Sephardic dishes requires a detailed and long preparation. Some of these dishes require the boiling, then frying, and then consequently cooking of the vegetables. In Sephardic cuisine, vegetable dishes outnumber the meat ones. Probably, this is a direct result of the desire to adhere to the kasherut principles which are the tenants of the Jewish culinary traditions. Some of the characteristics of the Sephardic cuisine are: - Usually, more than one kind of vegetable is used in any one dish. - Onions, tomatoes, parsley and lemon are used very often to enhance the taste of the dishes. The main modes of cooking are: Cooking with tomatoes, lemon and parsley (Huevo i Limon, Agristada, Papeyada)., Frying (Albondigas, Kavakadas etc.)., Baking in the oven (Takayyut, Fritada etc.)., Stuffed with meat or rice (Reynadas etc.)., Combining different styles The Dezayuno (breakfast) that takes place on Sabbath (Saturdays) and holidays is an important part of the Sephardic culinary traditions. The Dezayuno starts with Borekas, Boyos, Bulemas and continues with Fritadas, hard-boiled eggs, olives and cheese. It concludes with fruits like melons, watermelon and grapes. The different styles of preparing fish are: Uevo i Limon - lemon and eggs (Tempered)., Agristada (Sour, with flour)., Avramila - (With plums)., Cooking with tomatoes, lemons and parsley., Baking with tomatoes, lemon and parsley., Frying with sunflower oil

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English, Judeo - Spanish and Turkish. Color ills. 360 p. Mint. Including 4 CD, 1 DVD. The Maftirim repertoire, born in Edirne, the ancient capital of the Ottoman Empire is an example of Jewish mystic music. This music came to our days by being orally transmitted from master to student. However, with this form of transmission the number of these liturgical songs that arrived to our days has dropped from the thousands to very few indeed. The last three masters of this music in Turkey, David Behar, Hazzan Isak Maçoro and Hazzan David Sevi, who recorded the present work are maybe the last remnants of this old tradition. The present collection which is the result of five years of intensive work is the struggle to document and transmit whatever we have left of this kind of Turkish Sephardic liturgical music to the next generations. This unique collection should be of tremendous interest to everyone interested in Turkish Classical Music, Turkish Sephardic Music, Jewish Liturgical Music and any other kind of liturgical music. What will you find in the book that accompanies the album? A detailed introductory study on the Maftirim by Prof. Edwin Seroussi from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; A repertoire of piyyutim by poets stretching from Rabbi Israel Najjara (ca. 1550-1625) to Isaac Eliyahu Navon (d. 1952) printed in the collection Shirei Israel be-Eretz ha-Qedem (Istanbul 1925/6) and performed by the Maftirim until the last generations; Square Hebrew text researched revised and formalized by Prof. Tova Be'eri from Tel Aviv University; Square Hebrew text typed of the piyyutim, vocalized and annotated by Prof. Isaac Jerusalmi (Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati) with romanized transliteration and Ladino, Turkish and English translations; Musical scores digitalized by Karen Gerson Sarhon and edited by Udî Mahmut Özbay, who also included the "usûls" and metronome values; Lavish pictures of the present-day synagogues of Turkey taken by the famous photographer Izzet Keribar. What will you find in the album? The recordings of the repertoire kept in the memory of three Maftirim masters of the last and present generation, David Behar, the late Hazzan Isak Maçoro and Hazzan David Sevi in 4 CDs (audio) and 1 DVD (visual). A total of nearly 6 hours of audio and visual recordings.
