Starting a colony of Megaran Byzantium settled here 2,700 years the pagans, Christian, and Muslim societies who settled here not only built their cities according to the unique topography of the land, but also -to varying degrees- preserved the monuments of the civilizations that had preceded them. However, when people settled in the coastal areas, considering going as far as 8500 BC, the date of last finds. This urge to preserve has thus created a demonstrated continuity within the historical physiometry of the city. The urban order that had been Constantinople was continued in the Ottoman era. With the passing of hands, however, monumental mosques began to appear in the earlier Roman forums. A total of 112 of the best monumental buildings of Istanbul were selected for this book. The first selection was made based on the monuments remaining in the inner city, an area first delineated by Septimus Severus, and then expanded to include the districts added by Constantine and then, later, by Theodosius. This inner city area was also greatly expanded by the Ottomans as the districts after Beyazit were augmented to include the avenue stretching to Topkapi that acts as the borders of the lands dividing the Marmara Sea from the Golden Horn. In doing so, for the purposes of this book the iner city was thus classified by these former borders into four distinct districts. The districts of Galata, Eyu?p, and those lining the Bosphorus Strait, became the fifth sixth, and seventh districts to be covered in this work, while the city's Asian-side districts of Üsku?dar, Haydarpasa, and Kadiköy became the eighth district. The monuments of Ottoman's Istanbul that the reader will discover in this book have been thus presented according to eight separate districts, and all have been listed in alphabetic order.

Il suo autore, Nicolas Baudy, nato in Ungheria decise di emigrare in Francia molto giovane, considerato il numero chiuso imposto ai tempi nel suo Paese di nascita agli ebrei circa l’accesso agli studi. Dopo aver militato nella legione straniera ed essere stato prigioniero dei tedeschi riuscì a evadere dal campo di concentramento e a unirsi alla Resistenza francese. Dal 1949, anno di pubblicazione di questo libro, al 1963, fu redattore capo della rivista “Evidences”, pubblicata dall’American Jewish Committee.

Aussi ai-je cherché le moyen d'agrémenter ce sujet aride en soi-méme en yajoutant un peu de fantaisie, sans toutefois risquer d'en compromettre sa teneur historique. Je suis sûr que le lecteur trouvera dans le style de "Annuaire", calqué sur le style journalistique, prétant à ces événements appartenant à un passé lointain, un certain air d'actualité, qui ne l'empêchera pas d'accepter la form esans repousser et douter du fond. "Le Bureau des Taxes et Revenus", "Le Bureau des Statistiques" et "Le Bureau de Presse de la Cour" sont les noms de départements inventés de toutes piéces qui reviennent souvent au cours des évènements présentés sous formes de "nouvelles" dans l'Annuaire. Les données, chiffers, et estimations et le déroulment historique des faits figurant dans ces "nouvelles" ont pour objectif de donner une idée aussi précise que possible, de la contribution des communtés Juives, sous forme de: dîmes, taxes directes ou indirectes, dons, contributions de guerre, taxes spéciales etc; et les détails spécifiques à propos de la vie de nos ancétres parmi les peuples de formation et de cultures diverses cherchant aussi leur voie dans un monde en éternel mouvement. Note: Le lecteur ne doit pas douter de la valeur historique des faits, et des nouvelles suivies d'annotations "entre tirés" ou sous "Not edu Rédacteur", Ndlr. Comme émanant du "Correspondant" ou de "l'Envoyé Spécial" ou de la "Rédaction" ou de "lEditeur" qui transmettent une réflexion de l'auteur. A noter que les communications émanant de ces services comme articles, font intégralement partie des "nouvelles" proprement dites. "L'Annuaire", done aut lecteur, par son classement chronologique et toponymique, la possibilité d'accéder au déroulement des évènements dans leurs séquences historiques, et de déterminer aiséement le nombre de communautés dans les différentes villes, touchées par un méme fait. ll fait défiler de maniére schématique et dépouillée, cette longue historie aux méandres multiples, couvrant des siécles de présence Juive dans un monde hétéroclite, objet d'invasions, d'incursions, qui a vu défiler tour à tour la Gréce, Rome et les Arabes. Par sa présentation, "l'Annuaire" offre, aut lecteur attentif une documentation instructive émaillée par moments des réflexions qui reflétent ce que lui-méme ressent peut-étre à la lecture des faits. Parmi tous ces conquérants, organisés en Nations avec leurs Etendards "leurs Soldats" leurs Chefs Militaires "leurs Rois, brandissant un livre, la Bible, et une philosophie -le Monothéisme- une poignée d'individus, les Juifs" lls apparaisent louvoyant, progressant ou régressant, brimés, oppressés ou élevés et acclamés par ces peuples adeptes de cultures et de religions différentes. Deux religions, toutes deux issues de la religion "Monothéiste Méré" dont seul l'asservissement de ses adeptes pourrait assurer, justifier, et légitimer la prépondérance tant convoitée, par les membres des deux "Religions Filles", qui se combattent, d'ailleurs entre elles.
