186110077<p>Extraordinary copy owned by another previously enslaved American who found his way to freedom.</p><p>Israel Campbell born in Kentucky in 1815 spent the first decades of his life as property of several owners before after several attempts escaping slavery to Canada. He later spent twenty-four years in Texas where he became known as the <em>"</em><em>Father of Black Texas Baptists" </em>having reorganized the African Baptist Church at Galveston the first completely independent black Baptist congregation in Texas. Campbell self-published this book to raise funds to free his three children from slavery:<em> "Three</em><em> of my children are yet in the land treading the wine-press and making bricks without straw. And as time rolls on I see the oppressor's rod becoming heavier and the shackles becoming tighter and tighter around them and my heart yearns for them and my prayers are often and earnest for their liberation"</em> iii. He mentioned the risks of attempting to liberate them<em>".few know the danger the suffering or the peril of such a course until they have passed through its experiences"</em> iv while also believing it would not be the moral way of gaining freedom. Campbell discusses trying to work and save up enough money without financial help<em>: </em><em>"I might by hard labor in some mechanical occupation gain after many years enough to buy their freedom. should I have</em> preferred <em>the former plan their hairs might become gray while I was trying.</em><em>"</em>iv. Campbell's intention of writing this book is to not only tell the story of his life honestly without elaboration <em>"Let facts speak for themselves.</em><em>"</em> but to primarily raise enough funds to buy his children out of slavery: "<em>I expect to devote the proceeds of the sale of this book; by which I consider that I am not only gaining their liberty but am placing before the world the truest picture of the South and its institutions- both the dark and the bright side"</em> VI.</p><p>Most likely the copy of George W. Price Jr. with the signature <em>"</em><em>Geo. W. Price"</em>in pencil to front fly & with <em>G. W. PRICE</em> stamped in purple ink below. An additional <em>Price</em> stamp to rear of frontis & an erased visible only under high magnification "Geo. W. Price's Book / cost $1.00" to top of title page see image 7.</p><p>In 1862 Price Jr. 1843-1901 escaped slavery and joined the United States Navy. After emancipation he served in the North Carolina legislature from 1869 to 1872 first in the House of Representatives 1869-1870 and then in the Senate 1870-1872. He and his father George W. Price Sr. 1810-1882 were leading ornamental plasterers in Wilmington North Carolina having both learned their trade as enslaved artisans and worked on buildings such as the Bellamy Mansion. After the Civil War Price jr. continued to practice his trades as well as working in politics.</p><p>Green pebbled cloth. Wear to head and tail of spine with some loss of cloth to the top and bottom of hinges; occasional staining and thumbing; gatherings at pages 163 to 206 standing a little proud nonetheless an exceptional copy.</p><p>Unaccountably scarce with no auction records & with but three original copies v-a-v multiple later held in institutions. The original text and Gollancz's version are presented on facing pages. 500 copies were printed.The book has been hand-embellished with twenty-six very impressive and delicately rendered mainly floral decorations in various colours and with touches of gilt. These embellishments mostly take the form of decorative initials but the half-title page could easily be considered an independent artwork in its own right. On the front pastedown is the pictorial arts and crafts bookplate of the novelist Margaret B. Cross.On the rear free endpaper is the embossed stamp of the Neatham Mill Library. Endpapers tanned and spotted. Covers rubbed at the joints. Internally very good indeed the decorations being bright and unblemished. This work relies heavily on Ethan Smith's View of the Hebrews but adds additional information including Manasseh ben Israel's account of Antonio de Montezinos's discovery of the ten tribes in Peru. Worsley believes that the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim arrived in America first and that the other tribes followed after. He describes mounds and iron tools and explains that the mound builders had been destroyed by the Indians. He also mentions the discovery of large stone crosses in Central America and records the Indian tradition of a lost book of God. This work was first printed in 1822. Mormon Parallels 491. Israel Zingwell 1864 - 1926 expounds on Tolstoy's "What is Art" which was first published in English in 1898 the same year as this letter. He chastises Tolystoy's "christianise" of art and reflects on his own writings on the subject. Zingwill was one of the leading early thinkers and writers on Zionism and the territorial movement for Jews. "I had already studied Tolstoy’s “What is Art†- a subject on which I have myself published several articles. I have always regarded the work of art as a telephone between artist and audience and so far have an unconsciously agreed with Tolstoy. Tolstoy in fact in his noble but desperate effort to Chistianise life has been forced to try to christianise art. But art is larger than any creed .which appears only designed for the pleasure of the leisurely though in reality all who can may taste of it. Later Paper Wrappers 70 4 pages 18 x 12 cm Singerman 4588. <br> Gerson Rosenzweig 1861-1914 was born in Lithuania he taught Hebrew in Bialystok and in 1888 he emigrated to the United States. Rosenzweig edited several Hebrew periodicals - Ha-Ivri 1891-1902 Kadimah 1899-1902 Ha-Devorah 1911-12 - they were short-lived and earned him neither fame nor a livelihood. He also edited Hebrew columns in the Yiddish press. <br> Though he was a versifier rather than a poet he had a genuine flair for satire and he was known to his contemporaries as the "sweet satirist of Israel" and as a parodist he earned an honorable place in Hebrew literature. His Talmud Yanka'i "Yankee Talmud " 1907 1909 poured a stream of ill-humored sarcasm on the peddler the teacher the rabbi. The pages of that collection of satires resembled the pages of the Talmud: the text in large letters wreathed by commentary in Rashi script is divided into six tractates instead of the talmudic six orders. <br> Rosenzweig also denounced the vulgarisms of the country the worship of money the religion of success. Epigrammatic neatness was his forte. Example: "What is the difference between a convert and an anarchist A convert denies what he believes an anarchist believes what he denies. " Using a biblical phrase he quipped sardonically about his impending death by cancer of the tongue: "Life and death are at the mercy of the tongue" Prov. 18: 21. <br> He published two books of epigrams: Shirim Meshalim u-Mikhtamim 1893 and Hamishah ve-Elef Mikhtamim 1903; reprinted in Russia. 186026271<p><strong>1860 Arctic Boat Journey Isaac Hayes Exploration 2nd Grinnell Expedition KANE</strong></p><p>Henry Grinnell's second arctic expedition was a 19th-century Elisha Kent Kane voyage which in 1853 set out to find John Franklin and his lost expedition. Kane along with other crew on the USS Advance never found Franklin but were able to gather a lot of information about people geography and natural history of the Arctic region a relatively unknown region of the world. Although a pioneer in urologic surgery he did make significant advances in plastic surgery. In this work Israel discusses the first free bone graft to the nose where bone was harvested at a site away from the nose and replanted to the nose to give support for a nasal reconstruction. Without this support a nasal reconstruction would fail because of collapse. He was also known in the field of microbiology when in 1878 he was the first to describe the disease known as actinomycosis in humans caused by a pathogen later named Actinomyces israelii." Good. <br /> <br /> "John Love an itinerant who boarded with one of the Thayer brothers aroused their cupidity by the money he used in a small loan business. On a day selected because they were slaughtering hogs the brothers shot Love first and finished him off with an ax. More than two months passed before suspicions were aroused by the not very sensible explanations which the Thayers were giving for their possession of Love's property. When the body was found in the woods they were tried convicted and finally hanged in a field outside Buffalo" McDade. <br /> "Boston New York the place of printing was a small village south of Buffalo" Cohen. This is one of its earliest imprints. The title page cut of the coffins is eye-catching. Blackman Master of the Schooner Francis Edwards of Philadelphia dated 20 December 1862 and signed by William Harbeson Collector of Customs for the District and Port of Philadelphia. Faint old folds and one tape shadow unnecessary as the folds are sound a couple of very tiny nicks still very good or better. This loyalty oath prevented the signer from having interaction on the high seas with enemies of the Union i.e. Southern traders. Blackman was born in Galloway Township New Jersey in 1827. After the war he was a pioneer in the U.S. Life Saving Service in Absecon New Jersey where he died in 1883. unknown

Friedberger first offers a general view of religion at large and in reference to the Jew then proceeds to define the principle terms of Religion & Jew the latter with help of the Right Hon. Mr. Shylock. Comparisons with other nationalities show the Jew to be "a man living with the Jewish religion" not like Greeks as scientists or philosophers or in nations like England France or Germany as lawyer or as conquerer all of their activities are for the glory of God.<br /> <br /> God has chosen Zion we read in Friedberger to be his people but "I think it conclusive that God never intended the Jew to be a reasoning animal." Friedberger's at time humorous rendering states the Jew to be "A Religious Being" endowed with power gainful hands and piety & holiness and therefore commands all favors and blessings on him. Friedberger sways to irony at times and laments the self-involved and arrogant ways of the Jews at length only to arrive at god's forgiving and generous nature alas at hope.<br /> <br /> The manuscript includes a number of corrections and edits administered by the author. Text in English. Light wear along edges of pages with punch-hole at lower corner near spine. Light foxing of first three and last two leaves. Andrews a naturalized American citizen who was born in New Brunswick served as U.S. Special Diplomatic Agent to Canada 1849-54.He also served as U.S. Consul General in Toronto 1855-57. The Canadian-American Reciprocity Treaty of 1854 eliminated tariffs on raw materials and natural products.That treaty was terminated by the United States in 1866 partly because of increased protectionist sentiment in the USA.
