2000157183
In English. Soft cover 22 cm 400 pp. ISBN: 960-7070-37-2.

Presents the life work and teaching of St. Gregory Palamas as they relate to his identity as a monk of the Holy Mountain. In the consciousness of the Church as a whole St. Gregory Palamas Archbishop of Thessaloniki is not just a great Father of the Church and an Ecumenical Teacher but belongs to the company of the Three Hierarchs and the three great Theologians of the Church as "The Fourth Hierarch and Theologian". Drawing on information provided by St. Philotheos St. Gregory's biographer the author describes the Saint’s life from childhood before he moved to the Holy Mountain. Subsequently we see the Saint as monk priest Abbott and Metropolitan and it is stressed that he was a true Hagiorite not only because he stayed on the Holy Mountain but because he lived the life of the Holy Mountain. We learn about the Saint’s gifts and virtues but also his temptations which he regarded as a special blessing from God. The Saint's teaching is an expression of the life which he encountered on the Holy Mountain that is to say the hesychastic way of life which is the essence of the Orthodox tradition. The core of the Saint's teaching can be found in his dispute with the speculative philosopher Barlaam. He overturned Barlaam’s erroneous views and laid down the theological conditions for noetic prayer. He demonstrated that noetic prayer is found in the tradition of the Church and is not just the prerogative of monks but can be practised by all Christians. By setting out in theological terms the value of fasting vigil tears and compunction and also analysing the importance of the senses during the practice of noetic prayer he teaches us that the body cannot be overlooked in man’s effort to be purified. In fact he explains that the grace of God acts in the soul and from there is carried over into the body as well.

.

.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination. 'This book explores anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine an area that has so far been relatively neglected in academic studies. Anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine is significant because it was in Jerusalem in the middle of the 5th century that monks who opposed the Council of Chalcedon first attempted to establish a dissenting anti-Chalcedonian ecclesiastical hierarchy. The monk Peter the Iberian in particular was a key force in this project because of his high-level political connections to the members of the imperial court in Constantinople. The beginnings of anti-Chalcedonian history in Palestine constitute the fist tangible manifestation of the schism between the adherents and opponents of the Council of Chalcedon a schism which endures until today. This study also offers a further contribution in the field work carried out on site in the Middle East which traced the footsteps of Peter the Iberian and his followers into the regions of modern Israel Palestine Jordan Lebanon Turkey and Sinai/Egypt.' In the original Greek with a new translation by Spencer T. Kezios Protopresbyter. From the publisher: "Orthros for Feast Days The Holy Office of Orthros when celebrated on a weekday in commemoration of a Saint or major feast day never changes. Year after year it remains the same. Thus these two volumes numbers 2 and 3 of the projected six-volume series will be a permanent edition for yearly use. Therefore they are being published in a hard cover edition cloth bound 8-1/2 by 11 inches with large easy to read print in Greek with parallel English translations. It is in the same format as the more familiar Orthros published semi-annually. From the publisher about Vol. 2: "All the Orthros services from April to June for the Weekday celebration of Feast Days. Contained are all of the dramatic changes in rubrics and hymnology mandated during the Easter to Pentecost liturgical cycle; full and complete for every year from now until the year 2025. This makes it unique because though needed it has never before been attempted. This represents literally thousands of hours of work researching and calculating all the necessary changes. There are included for example eight 8 different ways to celebrate Orthros for the Feast Day of Saints Constantine and Helen. Other services included are: Saturday of the Souls for both Meat Fare and Pentecost; Lazarus Saturday; Ascension; and Mid-Pentecost. The other Saints' Days indicated by our Archdiocese for celebration are also included." The 2 volumes are uniformly bound in the original gilt-stamped maroon cloth. Oversize Hardcover.
