B/w and color ills. The Syrian Orthodox community in the mosaic of Istanbul.= Istanbul mozaiginde Süryaniler. This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community. "The present book is comprised of two different texts, 'The Lament of Old Serbia' by Abbot Seraphim Ristic? of Dec?ani from 1864, and 'The Current unfortunate state of Old Serbia and Macedonia' by Bishop Sava Barac? of Dec?ani from 1882. Along with these two texts is a short letter by Bishop Sava to the 1878 Berlin Congress."These two narratives are "profoundly valuable testimonies of the oppression under which the Serbs of Kososvo, Metohija and Macedonia lived in the last decades of Ottoman rule. The authors make use of concrete anecdotal examples of the almost daily atrocities , robberies and other acts of violence against the Orthodox Christian population" 118p.[2 copies found in WorldCat] Book

"Hitherto Numismatists when stydying the Origines of Coinage had confined themselves to the materials presented to them in the earliest money of Lydia, Greece and Italy, and on the other hand the Metrologists had almost completely limited their range of observation to the systems of Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. As the Comparative Method has yielded such excellent results in the study of other human institutions, I have endeavoured by its aid to get some new principles which may throw some fresh light on the first beginnings of monetary and weight systems." - from Preface. New English Paperback. Large demy 8vo. (22 x 16 cm). In English. 320 p. The Church of Sancta Sophia Constantinople. Sancta Sophia is the most interesting building on the world's surface. Like Karnak in Egypt, or the Athenian Parthenon, it is one of the four great pinnacles of architecture, but unlike them this is no ruin, nor does it belong to a past world of constructive ideas although it precedes by seven hundred years the fourth culmination of the building art in Chartres, Amiens, or Bourges, and thus must ever stand as the supreme monument of the Christian cycle. Our first object has been to attempt some disentanglement of the history of the Church and an analysis of its design and construction; on the one hand, we have been led a step or two into the labyrinth of Constantinopolitan topography, on the other, we have thought that the great Church offers the best point of view for the observation of the Byzantine theory of building.
New New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 21 cm). In English. 64 p., 25 color plates. "This small art book, after an introduction of the Royal Necropolis of Sidon, examines the faces and finally the lid of the Alexander Sarcophagus in detail. At the end of the book its decorative style and ornamentation is described. The Alexander Sarcophagus has been a major attraction of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum ever since it was founded in the late nineteenth century. Although named after Alexander the Great, the sarcophagus was not his, but was probably that of Abdalonymos, the last king of Sidon (Saida). Abdalonymos owed his throne to Alexander and the latter's close friend and general, Hephaistion. The subject matter of the reliefs decorating the sarcophagus suggests that Abdalonymos was here commemorating his benefactors; the sarcophagus thus takes its name, not from the ruler who commissioned it, but from its iconography.".

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (32 x 23 cm). In English. Color ills. 397 p. Splendor & pageantry. Textile treasures from the Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul. "This collection of textile treasures of the Armenian Churches of Istanbul is being introduced to world textile historians and art lovers for the very first time. Like the items the book introduces, the book too is a treasure, not only for textile historians, but anyone cultivating an interest in the culture, art and religious forms of Anatolia and Anatolian Armenians. Over 170 plates illustrate the textile treasury of the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul that have been executed in embroidery, appliqué, techniques of textile printing, and painting. We are amazed by the love, devotion and unique experiences that women artisans stitched into these pieces, while a closer look leads us to understand that their artistic visions were rooted in, and developed out of, Eastern traditions. The book also provides a brief historical background of the Istanbul Patriarchate and its Istanbul churches, discusses the iconographies of the objects and describes their techniques of production. The reference catalogue is highly useful as a reference for scholars, while the translations of the inscriptions on the pieces open a window to all readers onto the personal lives of the people who contracted and gifted these items to the Church."
