1889005255Claremont 1889. Wooden box. Very Good. N.d. circa late 19th century. 52 separate sheets housed within a handsome wooden carrying case or box. Fifty of these sheets contains a dried and flattened plant sample -- flowers leaves and stems -- with the plant or flower identified in a neat handwriting and most unusual accompanied by a pen and ink vignette. The vignettes are a mix -- some replicate the plant or leaf and thus might be regarded as modestly scientific in purpose; others are of objects or animals which a pleasant to look at or have an appealing association to the artist -- tennis racquets a sailing boat an owl and the like; yet a third group and these are to us the most special are pure whimsy with a touch of humor. This third category also doesn't relate to the plants or flowers. Perhaps one thing that ties all the extra artistic fillips together is that they have an outdoorsy sporty or summer day quality about them. It goes without saying that the plant samples are arranged neatly and even artistically. We know who the collector and artist was because his name is on both a title page and a brass label attached to the carrying case. The title page also informs us that this collection was created during the Summer of 1889 and for Claremont High School. We would guess that the Claremont in question is one in New Hampshire based on where this collection was found but we can not state that definitively. At the time Claremont was a prosperous mill town and presumably this young Willey would have been from an affluent family who afforded him the leisure to create such a collection. including a title page a second prelim with a pencil illustration of a rose and "Handle with Care" exhortation and 50 leaves with leaf and flower samples every one of which also has an original sketch of some kind. The box really an artist's carrying case with wooden handles attached with thin braided rope to the wood an brass clasps and studs measures 35 by 27.5 cm and is 4.5 cm deep. Each of the leaves the sheets is 32.5 by 25 cm. Loss of some leaves and some chipped leaves as to be expected given the dryness of the organic material. Chips on the side of the title. The title and other prelim are discolored by the metal bar which has held them down in the box. <br/><br/> unknown books

181954848Washington D.C.: Army Air Forces. 10-18- 1943. Color poster / map 47 x 35 1/2 inches 120 x 90 cm folding as issued now professionally mounted on linen backing. Wear and a little paper loss along the fold lines has been infilled light toning to lower centrefold; the poster presents very well with bright color. Stunning image of a hemispherical view with Japan at the centre encompassing the area from Iran in the west Australia in the south and as far as the west coast of the U.S. at the east of the map. The map maker is F.E. Manning one of the distinguished news illustrators of the war in a style very similar to that of Richard Edes Harrison. There is a scale along the lower edge which was intended to be clipped and used to measure distances of places on the map from Tokyo. Text reads: "This map is a photographic view of the world with the center at Tokyo. Thus with the detachable scale distances can be measured along any line running thru Tokyo. It should be noted that an inch at the center represents less mileage than an inch closer to the edges. The detachable scale has been designed to compensate for this and should be used only with the center at Tokyo. The photographic process used in making this map makes all distances measured with the tape approximate only. Distances are shown in statute miles. Lines between key cities do not represent regular air routes in all cases. They show distances between points that do not fall on a line going thru the center of the projection." The Newsmap posters were displayed in offices and factories to keep the American public updated with news of the war and to encourage their participation in the winning of it. . From the library of producer Mark Hellinger who wrote the film's screenplay bound in red three-quarter leather with gilt titles and designs marbled endpapers raised bands trimmed edges and Hellinger's name in gilt on the front board. Also included is a typescript on onionskin stock with the title and credits for Hellinger and story writer Faith Baldwin on the front wrapper in holograph ink. Finally laid in is a typed letter signed by Bette Davis dated March 31 1939 on Davis' stationery thanking Hellinger for kind words regarding her film "Dark Victory" 1939 and discussing her dismay with the script for "Comet Over Broadway" and her resulting decision to part ways with the film. <br/><br/>Mark Hellinger's first screenplay for Warner Brothers. His other credits include the noir antecedent "The Roaring Twenties" 1939 screenwriter "It All Came True" 1940 producer and his notable series of foundation noir films "High Sierra" 1941 associate producer "The Killers" 1946 producer and "The Naked City" 1948 producer. <br/><br/>Based on a story by Faith Baldwin published in "Cosmopolitan" in 1937 about Eve Appleton Francis wife of garage owner Bill Appleton Litel and aspiring actress. Bill gets into an argument with an actor over Eve and accidentally kills him. Eve takes her infant daughter and tries to make her way on Broadway while Bill is imprisoned. Set in New York. <br/><br/>Bound script:<br/><br/>Noted as FINAL on the distribution page dated 3/28/38 with credits for Hellinger Robert Buckner N. Brewster Morse Fritz Falkenstein and Frank Cavett on the following page flatsigned by Walter MacEwen. 1946243N.p. 1946. Very good. Poster 18 x 24 inches. Minor wear a few minor chips and tears at edges. A handsome poster advertising travel on the Santa Fe Railroad painted in the bold teals and earth tones associated with the Southwest. The poster features a Hopi dancer performing the Buffalo Dance. He fills almost the entirety of the image with a crowd of people gathered around the pueblo in the far background. The poster was designed by Don Perceval who did several such works for the railroad. Born in Britain Perceval 1908-1979 whose mother was also an artist moved to Los Angeles as a child and became enamored of the Southwest. He specialized in images of Hopi and Navajo Indians a subject he began sketching in the 1920s. That knowledge and interest is certainly applied here in the inclusion of culturally correct costuming for the event. In addition to his art he also did commercial work for the Santa Fe Railroad such as the present piece bringing his vibrant style to the company's advertising. unknown books

1958251171958. BALDWIN Faith. Typed Letter Signed. Two pages on both sides of a single sheet; hand-written in ink: "Rt. 2 Meed Ave. Norwalk Conn Sept. 26/58." Note: There are numerous typing errors and hand-written corrections in ink throughout the letter and spelling errors are for the most part not noted in the follow textual description- as there are many. To a teacher in California Baldwin apologizes for the delay in her response to several questions posed by the teacher. "I can reply to your questions only informally and in bad typing as I have never used a secretary and employ two fingers." Baldwin discusses several of her books and writes that Many Windows will be published on her 65th birthday. "About education. I don't have the true equivalent of a high school education. Mrs. Dow's school did give courses which if passed took you into college; but I wasn't interested in college; I was about 17 and a ga half sic when I left Mrs. Dow's. The education in Germany was during the war and consisted of house keeping school didn't learn a thing and of German which I learned. I am not sorry I didn't go to college; I think I would have frittered away my time and probably flunked. I was not a good student for I was far too lazy." Baldwin goes on in some detail about advising students to go to college "if it is possible" and discusses the benefits of a college education and the difficulty of supporting herself as a writer. "You can only eat while you write if you have rich parents or generous and/or a well-heeled husband or wife." Baldwin writes about the demands for college degrees in the business world and says she always advises her students to at least have a good secretarial degree "for this is really an open door. I have seen one advance from typist to private secretary to asst. editor and then editor on a national magazine." Baldwin continues about her father's profession lawyer and her mother's a grade-school teacher and her family's background missionaries editors etc. "It's tougher if you are born into a family without the cultural background but that can be overcome by education." She writes "in this era a college education is extremely valuable and certainly a high school education a must." Also signed by Baldwin as "Mrs. Hugh Cuthrell." Franz" in priest's garb with white collar; the author recounts his awakening to a life of service to mankind apparently via a mystical experience aided by an extract of ".leaves combined according to certain laws."; his mystical 'call' to go to Mexico at first thinking that he was only going for a vacation and ending spending 12 years there as a faith healer; recounting his adventures and the events of his life in Mexico with occasional digression into why the U.S. ought to be paying more attention to the neighbor to the south in addition to his thoughts regarding a more spiritually-based United Nations of the world; the doctor brings people back from the dead among other miracles and the final 30 pages of the text are filled with the thankful testimonials of those the author healed - of kidney and bladder diseases psychological problems loss of memory various inflammations and illnesses of children and adults more; he was also able to make accurate predictions for rain; we have been unable to find any corroboration of this person's life or indeed any finding whatsoever on the Doctor; there are a few clues in the text regarding his giving of sermons in New York and there is a possibility that further research would reveal more; an OCLC search at time of cataloging disclosed nothing that we could find; a couple of pencil numbers & names on title page & dedication page; printed single-side in double-space typing as is usual with a typescript; with an errata page at back; in blue stiff-paper covers about 8 ¼" x 11" size; with cloth spine glued-on gilt cover title; some wear sunning to cover spine cloth coming away in pieces; photo portrait with some wrinkling; contents in very good condition still securely bound and an interesting account. . One full color illustration on upper wrapper. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>This wine list is from a dinning car owned by the Fred Harvey Company. Fred Harvey 1835 - 1901 owned around 45 restaurants along the railroad and 20 dinning cars. His restaurant legacy lasted until his gradson died in 1965. The Fred Harvey Company was the sixth largest food retailer in the United States when it sold in 1968. Stamped in blue ink on the upper wrapper is the date "Nov 21 1942". On the inside at the head it also states "For Victory Buy United States War Savings Bonds And Stamps". A sign of the times. Included in the list are California and imported wines liquor mixed drinks beer cigars/cigarettes and playing cards. Also is an extensive list of waters and juices. Fred Harvey unknown books
