8vo. Vi, 144 pages. In German. In Series: Religionsgeschichtliches Lesebuch. 2. Ereweiterte Aufl. ; ; 17; Swiss Bible scholar and theologian, who taught biblical exegesis at the University of Basle. Bertholet wrote extensively on the canonical and extra-canonical books of the Bible. His Appendix on the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha in the Geschichte der althebraeischen Literatur (ed. , K. Budde, 1906, 1909) is considered one of the best in the field. In his works Der Beitrag des Alten Testaments zur allgemeinen Religionsgeschichte (1923) and Das Dynamistische im Alten Testament (1926) Bertholet maintained that the religion of ancient Israel, characterized by a strong personal conception of the Deity, was unique in a world dominated by dynamistic theories which viewed the universe as essentially constituted by natural and supernatural forces. 8vo. 31 pages. Dutch Protestant Bible scholar. His Alttestamentliche Studien (4 vols. , 190812) , a collection of writings on the composition of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and the early history of Israel, are uniform in their complete rejection of the starting points of modern Pentateuchal criticism. According to Eerdman, material found particularly in Genesis belongs to various stages of religious development of which the earliest is polytheistic and the latest monotheistic. He argued for the cultural historicity of the patriarchs and for the advanced state of ritual in the Mosaic period. He maintained that most of the legal codes of Leviticus were Mosaic, thus rejecting the commonly accepted J. Wellhausen-K. H. Graf hypothesis. He was one of the earliest scholars who advanced an exilic date for sections of the book of Daniel. [Zev Garber]. SUBJECT(S) : Covenants - Religious aspects - Judaism. OCLC lists 23 copies worldwide. 8vo. Xxxv, 308 pages. From preface: This book is an evolutionary study of Christendom. Although it loargely takes the form of research into ancient history, it is in substance an inquiry into vital questions of today. Owing to a recent separation of Church and State, there is a tendency to take for granted that religion deals only with matters of belief about things what have no concern for practical persons, or that it relates only to private, individual affairs. Hence the need for pointing out that the vital religious ideas of Christian society took shape in response to a social pressure as tremendous and compelling as that in which we live today.
