Prepared By The Bureau Of Immigration." 2. "Map Of The Santa Fe Route And Connections." An uncommon promotional for the territory of New Mexico printed in Santa Fe by the Bureau of Immigration and including large folding maps of New Mexico and its land grants and of the Santa Fe Railroad and connections. The text covers a wide range of subjects such as the land and its energy resources farming cattle raising manufacturing irrigation projects the New Mexico Hot Springs schools population statistics and a long section of detailed descriptions of the New Mexico territory county by county. Herd 857 says "Scarce." The first map shows the location boundaries and grantees of all of the numerous early Spanish and Mexican land grants prepared by the Bureau of Immigration of which Max Frost was a member of the Executive Committee. The status of land grants in New Mexico at this time was a matter of contention and the detailed information given on this map would have been of interest to current and prospective land owners in the territory. The second map by Rand McNally shows the routes and extensive connections along the Santa Fe Railroad from Chicago to Missouri and then snaking into Kansas and throughout the Southwest. This work is scarce to rare. Rebacked with both the original front and rear covers laid-down separation along the spine joint of the front cover has been expertly repaired small closed tear to fore-edge of front cover expertly repaired else a very good clean and solid copy. Lithograph illustrations 322 two per plate except for frontis & last illustration which are single plates. Octavo Victorian blind stamped ribbed cloth rebacked/ tips worn Frontis TP xvi 788pp 162 plates with 322 illustrations. Some foxing though mainly marginal and 2 plates with some staining while towards the end there is a marginal brown stain not touching the plate area but for the last few text pages just touching the letters. The yellow glazed endpapers are brown mottled. Illustrations 1-80 show nature mostly as groups of animals and plants. Illustrations 81-241 depict trades incl. several cooking scenes miners textile weaving wig-makers etc. 243-256 cosmography & geography showing different religions virtues. 269-282 show children playing men playing billiards wrestling circus & theatres lessons in fencing dancing balloon rides fireworks bullfights horse racing a marvellous train with a postillion blowing a horn & open coaches and a chimney like a barber's pole later we see deep sea diving bells being used to salvage cannons. There is an example of slave traders a summer fair and Christmas celebrations finally a few more trades eg. forging steel the file maker carpets being made nightwatchman messenger and post with finally a grave-side scene. Each illustration is accompanied by a 5 language text - English German French & Latin and newly added for the first time in this edition Italian. These describe the animals and the trades etc. This Gailer reworking of the Orbis Pictus is nearly a new book and makes one of the most complete book of trades cf. Seebass 398 Wegehaupt I 697. Colour pictorial boards. 8 chromolitho moveable pictures. Pull the tab and the picture changes. B/w illustrations. Text in verse. Spine bumped and some light rubbing to cover edges. A few light spots to front edge of spine and some light scuffing to rear cover. Generally covers bright. Joints are cracked. Inscription in ink to verso of front free-endpaper. The second moveable image is not working - could possibly be repaired. Otherwise all others in excellent working order. Some light foxing and page browning and the pull-tabs are just a little grubby from fingering. Overall a super copy of a scarce moveable book. Published by Ernest Nister hardcover

Shears writing as F.E. Ware incorporated Sheffield people and setting in her third novel Little Brown Bess. According to the introduction "In a New England village the author of the following narrative was born and reared. The scenes and incidents pictured here are not sketches from the imagination but actual occurrences." The background is the imaginary town of Alderly where John Dikeman and his wife Sally lived a marriage of disappointment. Their daughter Bessie flees to the city. Originally published in 1874 as a four-act drama now reworked into a novel version. A very uncommon work bound in pictorial blue cloth stamped in black depicting Bessie within a decorative frame spine gilt corners and spine ends lightly worn some darkening to spine and edges peach colored endpapers previous owner's name Guilford D.
